This resource aligns with the Australian curriculum and introduces students to a range of basic hand tools covering their uses, tips, and possible pitfalls. The video demonstrates how to use a range of saws, planes, and chisels safely and effectively and is suitable for years 7 – 12, providing teacher notes and ‘before and during program’ questions that will consolidate students’ knowledge and understanding. They will create their own learning artefact in the form of a digital slideshow that provides comprehensive information and demonstration on hand tools of their choice. It then facilitates students to work collaboratively to create their own project design using digital technology in the form of computer-aided design (CAD) software programs, Autodesk Inventor or Tinkercad.

These activities have been designed to provide opportunities for choice, creativity, authenticity and working collaboratively.

As part of Education Queensland’s Strategic Plan 2020-2024, we must “engage every learner through personalised, collaborative and integrated learning experiences for the digital generation” (Department of Education, 2021). This learning sequence supports this goal.

This lesson plan asks students to investigate ways to improve common classroom furniture (desks, chairs, cubbies) to better fit our modern education needs. Using the engineering design process, students will design their own furniture by creating 2D sketches and 3D models that can fit into any educational space, whether at school or at home.
