In fact, most of the synthetic materials were also able to be made. This was much to the displeasure of Andrew Mellon, Secretary of Treasury and owner of the 6th largest bank DuPont, who had recently invested in an oil company. Oddly, the production of hemp actually decreases up until 1933. Especially considering the recent discovery that hemp paper is objectively superior to wood paper in every way. Melon almost certainly had something to do with that.

In the 1930s, William Randolph Hearst, owner of the largest news conglomerate, invested in woodland to make paper for most of the newspaper industry. At the time, DuPont was supplying the chemicals he used to preserve his papers. The two of them teamed up to take hemp off the market completely.

In 1932, Mellon appointed Harry J. Anslinger, a relative of his, as head of the newly established Federal Bureau of Narcotics. Anslinger campaigned to outlaw the "narcotic*" Cannabis. Using his connections in congress, he passed the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937, effectively outlawing the substance.

Racism had heavy connections to the campaign and propaganda against the drug, with Anslinger saying "Most marijuana smokers are Negroes, Hispanics, Filipinos and entertainers...This marijuana causes white women to seek sexual relations with Negroes."

The Controlled Substances Act had a definite connection. In the 1970s, Nixon listed the drug as a Schedule I substance under the CSA using this propaganda as justification. Some of his officials have stated that the decision was to target African-Americans and the antiwar movement at the time. 

When we look at laws, we are biased towards keeping them in place. The reasoning being, if they are there, they probably have a reason to be. We then justify it from there. But not all laws had a just reason to be passed. Only by looking at why a law was passed can we understand its purpose. If a law is no longer needed for its original purpose, or the purpose was stupid, it should be repealed. If it would have a purpose now, pass another law with modern wording. Although our past is important, we should not let it define us.

Overview :
I completely agree that the past shouldn't define us. Unfortunately, so much of what happens today is because of things that have happened in the past.

Roosevelt Standard : Marihuana weed will cause insanity 
It is really fasinating how simple and direct the point is. It makes me wonder how peopke back then would describe as insanity.

How a racist hate-monger masterminded America’s War on Drugs : 
I know that racism is mixed in with the war on drugs, but it is still jarring. Also, I known another of people that smoke weed, and not a single one of them could be described as a violent person. 

Activity :

I currently don't know of any other laws that are ridiculous or pointless. But that is probably because I don't have much of an interest in any laws. But after this reviewing this padlet, I'd like to begin my own research.
