Mary Lennox is a sickly ten-year-old girl, unloved by her wealthy British parents who have turned her over to the care of their servants. She has grown up in British India to become a spoiled, selfish, and rude girl. Then a cholera epidemic kills her parents and the servants. Mary survives, but is found alone in an empty house. Taken in briefly by the clergyman who finds her, she is soon sent to Yorkshire, England, to live with her uncle Archibald Craven. He lives in an isolated house, Misselthwaite Manor. When she gets there, she is rude to everyone, disliking her new home and the people in it. She especially hates the dark, foggy moor surrounding it. A kindly maid, Martha Sowerby, entertains Mary with tales of Archibald’s late wife, who loved to garden and had a beautiful walled garden where she tended to roses. She died from an accident in the garden, and in his grief, Archibald locked the garden and buried the key. Mary is fascinated with this secret garden, and she finds something to enjoy in her new home. Her manners begin to improve, and she grows attached to Martha, gardener Ben Weatherstaff, and a robin that she sees on the grounds. Her health improves, and she begins to enjoy her new life. However, she is concerned about mysterious cries that she hears through the house at night.
