In 1804 the expedition group and several Native American tribes from the Mandan people built a Fort to provide a shelter from winter . The fort was called Fort Mandan due to his localisation in North Dakota. In the expedition team the translator Toussaint Charbonneau brought his Native American wife "Sacagawea" who was pregnant. She was also a translator. She became an important member of the group. In 1805, the expedition decided to leave for Mandan. But, quickly, the weather changed and the boat in which where Sacagawea and Charbonneau became unstable because of the wind. Toussaint panicked and all the stuff in boat fell in the water ( including Lewis's journals). Thanks to Sacagawea many things were saved from destruction as she collected all the lost items. To thank her, they named a river after her.

shelter: abris
items : articles
quickly : rapidement
translator : traducteur
pregnant : enceinte
stuff : affaires

The Corps of discovery wanted to reach the Pacific coast.
On their way to the Clearwater River they headed towards the Rocky Mountains, their path was somewhat dangerous, but they eventually found the Columbia River nine days after their departure. They saw the Pacific Ocean in front of them. But unfortunately they could not get there because of a stormy weather which ruined their camps during their last stopover. At least, in november 7th, the group passed the gorge and reached the Ocean coast.

Reach: atteindre
head towards: se diriger vers
stormy weather: temps orageux
stopover: escale/halte

Captain Meriwether Lewis and Lieutenant William Clark were selected to lead the expedition. Lewis was the secretary and long time friend of President Jefferson, he was recommended by Benjamin Franklin to do this mission because he was familiar with the Indian customs. Lewis was strict whereas Lieutenant Clark had a more laidback behavior compared to him. He still was an involved leader and had a wonderful understanding of mapping and navigation.

customs: coutumes
laidback: décontracté
involved: impliqué
mapping: cartographie

In the Great Plains, the explorers met a tribe who was unknown to this day. They told them that the land was owned by a Great Father to the East while giving them presents such as peace medals and whiskey to be in good terms. In the meantime, they knew that the Missouri River was controlled by Lakota people (Teton Sioux) and they had to pay high fees to pass their section of the river. That’s how they met that tribe. The meeting was mostly peaceful but there were some tensions. At the end, the explorers and the tribe were in good terms. They were able to pass the section of the river without problems

unknown : inconnu
owned: possédé(e)
Lakota people: native tribe

high fees: des droits de passages élevés ( dans ce contexte)

Jefferson was the president of the United States at the time. He layed the foundation of the American Manifest Destiny to help forge the country based on freedom and prosperity. He said that he liked the dreams of the future better than the history of the past. This former president completed the biggest purchase of the American history which was the Louisiana Purchase bought from the French leader, Napoleon Bonaparte and was about 11, 250, 000 US Dollars. Jefferson wanted America to be an exemple for the world.

forge: forger
purchase: une vente
former: ancien

The journey began on May, 14th. It started from St Louis, on the Missouri river. They took one complete month to get away from the modern Missouri. There were a lot of mosquitoes which kept on infesting them. Three days later, the group faced their first discipline issue, so the Captains were forced to hold three courts martials related to an overnight problem when they were staying at St Charles. For instance, John Collins was absent without leave. Over the course of the next nine months, 6 courts martials were held, and 2 banishments from the party occured.

journey: trip
mosquitoes: moustiques
courts martials: military trial (procès)
without leave: without authorisation

They suffered from dysentery due to poor drinking water. On top of that, they had rheumatism and had veneral diseases as a result of promiscuous activities. Besides, Sergent Michael Floyd was diagnosed with choleric condition. They were unable to operate on him due to the group's condition. He died on August 20th,1804.

The Bitter Root Mountains's expedition started on August 31 st from Camp Fortunate. Following the Bitter Root River Lewis and Clark reached the mountains. The Journey was quite complicated due to food becoming scarce. They had to eat two colt because they were starving. Even with the information that the Shoshone shared with them the group got lost on the road. Unfortunately, snow covered their path, they were exposed to the elements which complicated their journey and made it even harder. We can imagine how hard it can be to venture on an expedition somewhere you don't know and be confronted to bad weather. When they were looking for food they met a new tribe called the "Nez Perce Indians". This tribe received them quite well and they came back for the rest of the group on September 22 nd.

Scarce = Rare
Colt = Poulain
starving: mourir de faim
Shoshone: a Native tribe
path: chemin
to be exposed to the elements = Faire face aux intempéries
Venture = S'aventurer
