Alcohol was blamed for abuse in households, crimes, and truancy in workers. To make matters worse, World War 1 demonized purchasing alcohol since that money could be spent on the war effort. As a result of these factors, the 18th Amendment was passed so that starting in 1920, selling, manufacturing, and transporting alcohol was prohibited in the United States. While the 18th Amendment was supported in the early 1920’s, many were tired of the law by the 1930’s. Finally in 1933, the 18th Amendment was repealed by Congress.
