The statement “students need to develop an inter-est in and an awareness of words means that if students are intrinsically motivated to learn new words, they will embrace broadening their vocabulary. They will seek out new vocabulary words. Learning new vocabulary words won’t be a task that is only done out of necessity, it will be embraced and become second nature. In paragraph 2 on page 29, students become interested and enthusiastic about words when instruction is rich and lively. It also allows students to take notice of words in a more general way. It is important for students to develop an interest in vocabulary because readers can't fully understand texts without knowing the meaning of the words within the text. When they have an interest in words they have a connection to the words.
