Fireflies are common names for coleopteran insects. Its scientific name Lampyridae.
In fireflies, the luminous organs are located on the lower face of the 2nd or 3rd abdomen that precede the last one, like those of the fireflies found on each side of the basal part of the pronotum. This location of the luminous organs and also the existence or not of flashing light classifies these insects within the two families mentioned.
These luminous organs are present in both male and female, and in females the emission of light is greater.
The light emitted by fireflies is the result of a chemical reaction that occurs between two substances present in the insect's body: luciferin and oxygen. This phenomenon is known as bioluminescence.
Bioluminescence is the phenomenon carried out by fireflies that allow them to emit light. This luminosity occurs because there is a chemical reaction between a substance called luciferin, present in this insect, which, when released into the air, is oxidized by molecular oxygen.
They light up for: adult insects "light up" when they want to be available to potential partners. The patterns of light can vary according to each species - some stay on for a long time, others blink.
Both males and females use light to attract a partner and communicate during court.
Their larvae feed mainly on vegetables and other minor insects.
In addition to fireflies, other animals have bioluminescence, especially marine animals that live in the depths of the ocean.
YASMIN ARAUJO-1703

[1] Its name derives from its ability to produce light, emitted by small organs called photophores. [2] This fish is, on average, 12 centimeters long Sampling through deep trawl indicates lantern fish account for up to 65% of all biomass fish in the high seas. In fact, lanternfish are among the most widely distributed, populous and diverse of all vertebrates. ANA BEATRIZ VENANCIO LOPES 1703

Fluorescent amphibian
Unlike bioluminescence, fluorescence does not happen in dim environments. "The frog's molecules absorb light of a certain wavelength, excite themselves and re-emit light of another color with less energy, which in this case is sky-green," Faivovich told AFP. The researcher explains that, in the species, the origin of fluorescence is due to “a combination of the emission of compounds from the skin and lymph glands - excess blood fluid - which is filtered by the pigment cells of the skin, which in this species is translucent ”.

To verify that the phenomenon is natural of Hypsiboas punctatus and not a consequence of captivity, the researchers analyzed other specimens of the species and verified the luminescent property in all of them, which is very rare in terrestrial vertebrates. "Fluorescence in natural organisms is very common in aquatic species, and more or less usual in some insects, but it has never been reported scientifically in amphibians"

MARIA LUIZA LAMBERT 1701

In fact, it is the only terrestrial gastropod (among thousands of snails and slugs) known to be bioluminescent. It is so illusory (like many snails) that an image in the dark could not be obtained. The eggs were observed to have globules that glow in the dark continuously. Young and adult snails can produce small bursts of green light. Although many land snails communicate through pheromones, it is suggested that these tropical species may also use their bioluminescence as a means of communication.

Fireflies are common names for coleopteran insects of the families Elateridae, Phengodidae or Lampyridae, notorious for their bioluminescent light emissions. Their larvae feed mainly on vegetables and other smaller insects. roots and base of the plant stem. One of the most widely distributed and most common species in Europe is the Lampyris noctiluca, in which only the males are winged. The bioluminescent organs of the firefly are located at the bottom of the abdominal segments. Luciferin is oxidized by nuclear oxygen, with the mediation of the enzyme luciferase, resulting in oxyluciferin that loses energy, thus making the insect emit light. The females do it to attract partners, but their disadvantage is their own luminosity, which can also attract predators such as lizard.
Maria Fernanda Maia Araújo 1703

They were discovered last year during a survey of the island's rat population. While most people are interested in the prison buildings and the history of the inescapable island, other visitors have their eyes on the animal life, including the seabirds like pelicans, cormorants and egrets, and you know, glowing bugs.

The millipedes were discovered last February as researchers used black lights in their work identifying the scale of rat populations. KQED writes, "To identify rats, National Park Service staff routinely place bait in feeding stations. The bait is laced with a non-toxic fluorescent dye that ends up in urine stains and feces. Surveyors later scan the grounds at nighttime with black light. The more glowing they observe, the larger they extrapolate the rat population to be. A recent February search turned up no evidence of rats. Instead, surveyors were surprised to discover millipedes glowing intensely white."

Maria Fernanda Reis - 1701

Noctiluca scintillans looks like algae. But, technically, it can function as an animal or as a plant.

This kind of proliferation is triggered by agricultural pollution, which can be devastating to marine life and local fishing, according to University of Georgia oceanographer Samantha Joye, who showed the Associated Press photos of the sparkling water.

Noctiluca is an organism formed by a single cell that eats plankton and is eaten by other species. Plankton and Noctiluca become more abundant when nitrogen and phosphorus from agricultural runoffs increase.

Unlike other similar organisms, Noctiluca does not directly produce chemicals that can attack the nervous system or other parts of the body.

But recent studies show that it may be linked to events that have been harmful to local marine life. Noctiluca's role in both prey and predator may increase the accumulation of toxins from algae in the food chain, according to oceanographer R. Eugene Turner of Louisiana State University.

Also known as sparkles of the sea, red Noctiluca scintillans contribute to red tides - blooms of deadly algae that are toxic to marine life. Excessive algae can also deprive water of oxygen, creating harmful dead zones. At the same time, however, RNS are important for ocean ecosystems, as they feed on other phytoplankton and zooplankton.

By: Maria Eduarda Pinheiro da Costa-1701

The biolumininess light is the production of light by living organisms. the mechanism behind bioluminescence involves a molecule capable of emitting light and an enzyme, called luciferin and luciferase, respectively. Light is emitted when luciferin is oxidized, this reaction being catalyzed by luciferase. The fireflys can be found usually in forest, field and marshes, and there are also more than two thousand species of fireflies around the planet.
Pedro Henrique Andrade de Lima-1703

Jellyfish is a taxonomic grouping that includes jellyfish, water mothers, jellyfish or jellyfish, free life forms of adult cnidarians, which are found in the Scyphozoa, Hydrozoa and Cubozoa classes. Almost all jellyfish live in the oceans, as components of zooplankton.
Jellyfish are related to corals and sea anemones. There are about 200 species, or types, of jellyfish. They are found in all oceans. Most live on or near the surface of the water.

The typical jellyfish is shaped like a bell or an umbrella. Some are so small that we cannot see them. Others are over 2 meters. They can be transparent (you can see through them), others are white, brown, pink, blue or burgundy. Some have eyes around the edge of their bodies. The mouth and stomach are in the middle of the body.
