Incentives or not?

Some teachers do not believe in using incentives or rewards in their classroom practice. These teachers often make a comment like, 'I just expect them to do the right thing, why should they be rewarded for it? When I was a classroom teacher I did use incentives but these often weren't thought out prior by myself. I didn't have any organised systems in place. My incentives tended to be spur of the moment things like, if we do this really well we will have 10 minutes of 'ninja tag' - a game I knew was a class favourite. I felt I didn't need an incentives/rewards system operating in my class. I felt I had good relationships with my students and there was little inappropriate behaviour. I did have an organised system however for one of my autistic students who had a reward sticker chart personalised to him with his goals and an agreed reward. I was one of those teachers who believed people should just do the right thing without expecting rewards. And then I did the IYT course as a teacher and my thoughts and beliefs around incentives in classrooms changed.

Some students need an individualised, tailored rewards system to help them achieve their goals. There are many templates available for this and it can be an easy way to support a student. A sticker chart can be a simple visual way of motivating a child to reach their goals and reward. I always make sure I record the goal on the chart too.
