Due to the fact that each canton in Switzerland has its own school legislation, there is no single national education system, there is also no national ministry of education. Such a decentralized system has developed as a result of the existence of different cultures and languages.
At present, the age of admission to school, the length of the school year and the duration of compulsory schooling are the same for all cantons in the field of education. Otherwise, the cantons remain sovereign. Communities are empowered to make local compromises.
