14 monumental paintings by abstract expressionist Mark Rothko. The Houston landmark, commissioned by John and Dominique de Menil, opened in February 1971. Deep purple and velvety black panels hung within octagonal-shaped chapel. Expressive power of colour - used in place of figurative images. Large colour fields intended to envelop viewer - meditative/reflective - sitting in solitude. Spiritual qualities and experience. Patrons (the de Menils) believed in the power of dialogue, spirituality and power of art to transform social/political changes (post war years)

R.A. was a leading figure in the Op art movement, interested in intense colours (contrasting/complementary) and their relationship to each other. Majority of his work = about formal relationship/impact of colours against each other. Plus Reversed explores the contrast between red/green (or blue: me and my friend were in disagreement about what colour it is), and develops on the theories of R.A.'s mentor Josef Albers re: contrast of colour. Technically not one colour, but about engagement between colours and alteration to perception of them? (Limited palette makes this ok??)
