The Enlightenment helped form the liberal ideology. It developed from inspiration from greek and roman background. They wanted an emphasis on logical reasons They wanted to focus more on arts beauty, and the development of themselves.

The French Rev.

The French Revolution helped bring the idea of an individualistic lifestyle. While the people in the French Rev. discovered that they no longer wanted to be ruled by a monarch and have their decision making be monitored and possibly be beheaded for their opinion. The National Assembly brought forth the idea to overthrow the monarch and claim their rights as there own. This helped create the idea of classical liberalism.

The American Revolution contains the idea of classical liberalism due to Alexander Hamilton. Hamilton was the kickstarter to the American Rev. wanting America to gain independence. Forming the thought of people in America that people have the right to think for themselves

Adam Smith

People were beginning to be introduced to the ideas of mechanics and machines, which led to the industrial rev by showing that very little work could be done with the right machine and with the right amount of people. But not only were adult working in these factory's that were being built, but children were also used for labour.

Luddites

Did not like the fact that machines were replacing peoples jobs with cheaply paid and unskilled labourers. They broke into factories destroying 200 machines in 6 years.

Robert Owen & Utopian Socialist

Utopian socialist wanted a perfect world. They wanted to end bad working conditions, and to gain a better education. They thought that with these changes society would become more ideal for everyone. Robert Owen believed that education was the key to a perfect society. He wanted less child labour, and for them to get a better education before working in harsh factory conditions with very minimal pay.

Believed that worker sould own means of production and share profits equally, rather than having capitalists making all of the money. Marx believed that a workers revolution was necessary before changes in society would occur.

Edmund Burke & Classical Conservatism

Classical conservatism was very reactionary, and wanted change to happen immediately. Classical conservatism did not accept classical liberalism in any way. Edmund Burke wanted the government to represent the will of the people but also their legacy. He was simply related to the issues of his time, not worrying too much about the present or past, but was horrified by the French Revolution

Rise of Feminism & Mary Wollstonecraft

Belief that men and women should be treated equally. There were different spheres that defined a man or woman, and they wanted that the change. Mary was an educated women that first fought for men and then for woman rights. She argued that education for woman would help man and woman become equal
