I am committed to ensuring my classroom reflects culturally responsive practices. This starts with getting to know my students, especially in the beginning of the Spring 2022 Semester. As teachers, it is our duty to learn the behaviors, backgrounds, and challenges our students face so we are better equipped to address them. Through questionnaires and classrooms discussion such as students' likes/dislikes, students tend to share personal experiences that have deeply affected them. Eliciting this kind of information can assist me in better meeting my students’ needs.

This semester I am committed to finding texts, and also making adjustments to what we are reading, that reflect student preferences -- or at least dovetail with what students are watching. I want to use more analogies in Chemistry (e.g. Corn Muffins and Chemical Reactions) that encourage students to make connections between their world and this very real Science iLearn...In general, I want students to cultivate more ownership of the physical space by collaborating with each other (and me) in designing and making anchor charts, posters, drawings/organizers, and decorating their folders and assignments, in ways that express who they are, their culture, stories, struggles, fashion, everything! I am also going to keep wearing that big tag on my back pocket so Jaydin comes to class and finishes his Chem iLearn.

Real life connections and personal experiences from students when planning and executing the different topics in the Science course is my goal this semester.I will incorporate in both class and lab, activities that will connect their culturally diverse experiences to the biological and physical aspects of the science course. This will help create that safe space and better understanding of the world around them.

Mazz - In English 3/4 and 5/6 we are starting with a project that asks students to tell their own stories through words AND images. We are excited to bridge the generational gap by trying to tap into the idea of telling our stories on social media (Insta-story). We also offer a great deal of choice, not only in content (which book or story they read or topic they research) but also in presentation (do they want to write, draw, speak, etc.). I will make a commitment to listening to feedback from students to make their learning more meaningful to them.
