    the new Receiver. So there will be a whole part of his life which he

    Unfortunately there is no direct answer to this question. However I can make the assumption that they release them to make room for new old people and to prevent any illness or pain the old might experience.

    I think it can hurt to be released the text states "The newborn
    squirmed, and wailed faintly." it also states the father saying "I know, I
    know. It hurts, little guy." and "the newchild, no longer crying, moved his arms and legs in a jerking motion." These statements all seem to indicate that the new child is in pain.

    And Gabriel? For Gabriel there would have been no life at all. So there had not really been a choice.

I think blind obedience is most important because in the community they are constantly doing what they're told and never ask why they do it. Of course the other themes appear in the book often, but blind obedience happens every single minute of the story. Even though the author doesn’t say it in the text, there is someone doing their job without questioning it and there might even be someone releasing someone else without questioning it. For example in the text Fiona is trained to release the old ,and even though Fiona is very fond of the old she doesn’t seem to have any problems with killing them. Yet another example is the choices they don’t get to make like naming their child or choosing their spouse and no one ever questions any of it. In the text the giver clearly states "Listen to me, Jonas. They can't help it. They know Nothing." I think what the Giver is implying is that the citizens of the community have been doing this for years and years and everyone just does what they’re told because that is what everyone else does.
