I find myself being more connected to the author and what he/she is trying to convey through the text. The book I have chosen is "The Glass Castle" by Jeannette Walls. The book is a memoir about the authors life experiences and a perspective of her family and all the struggles and successes they experienced. After spending many months in the hospital, Jeannette's father kidnapped her from the hospital as he didn't believe in doctors. The quote occurs when she gets back home and her mother talks to her. This quote represents the Walls' family's values in perseverance, strength, and belief that pain/suffering make you a better human being. Other moments of their resourcefulness is when they used large cardboard boxes as beds and depending on the land around them for nourishment. Throughout the entire story, the reader is shown that Mom will tell her kids anything and everything as she believes kids should not be left in the dark in any way. When she does not tell the kids what the Green Lantern is, it prompts the reader to wonder what keeps her from telling her kids what it is. Perhaps she had bad experiences in places like the Green Lantern in her past. After moving to Welch, West Virginia they were extremely cold and couldn't even afford coal to heat up their house during the winter. Yet again, they were forced to resort to their slick methods of using the best of their situation to try and provide for themselves and their family. Although it did not turn out to be too successful, Jeannette and Brian tried to collect small pieces of coal that were falling off of the trucks. One may interpret this as bad parenting, but the book is crafted in such a way that at this point, the reader is aware of the families parenting style and is even appreciative of the mother's bluntness and disregard of safety. Throughout the entire book, the Wall parents are extremely hands off and let their children do as they please. They have a very different perspective on life, as they view civilization and conformity in a poor light.
