Participants were found to have low levels of depression, anxiety and stress AND moderate to high levels of mother, father and peer attachment, within the target ages 18-22. There was also no gender differences found within Deliberate Self Harm. This demonstrates that interpersonal relationships are detrimental in individuals psychological wellbeing.

Deliberate Self Harm: The Interplay Between Attachment and Stress (Hallab and Covic, 2010).

Long term studies conducted with young children found that the relationship they had with their caregiver showed what kind of attachment style they were likely to get in the future (e.g. Securely attached children readily seek contact and comfort
from their caregiver when reunited after brief separations). This also showed if they were likely to have depression in the long future (etc. avoidant anxious styles are more likely to have depression than secure ones). This demonstrates that attachment styles affect individuals from a young age, and shows in which stages can depression increase.

(Ainsworth et al., 1978).

Being a victim of bullying can lead to social anxiety, higher emotionality, submissiveness in relationships. This is often associated with being ostracised in adulthood.

Being a bully on the other side contribute to development of antisocial behaviour in the adulthood. Bullies are often described as highly aggressive in social context, lacking social understanding and have little capacity for empathy.

2. Engagement in self-harm can impact a relationship as well as can be an effect of the relationship. In Gratz et al. (2002) it was found that insecure attachment to fathers was positively associated with DSH for females but not for males. On the other hand, the attachment styles with mothers did not impact the engagement in DSH that much. Father attachment and stress was the highest predictor of DSH, peer attachment was moderate and Mother Attachment was a weak predictor on DSH (Hallab and Covic). Peer attachment plays a role in self-harm but is more for adolescence for turning for help to peers rather than parents. If an individual engages in a self-harm it can also predict being later in an abusive relationship.
