ARTZ 251 Nathaniel Freeman

I was inspired by my own Babushka (grandmother) who currently lives in Uzbekistan, Russian folklore such as Baba Yaga, and also by the apothecaries and plagues in medieval Europe. The crow and rat clad in foreboding cloaks are meant to mirror each other as the more vicious and freeing side of death, the small skulls surrounding them like collected souls, and the bottles behind full of unknown contents. Each made with paper I created from scratch has a distinctive scent and texture that is unique to each other and placed with true intentions. The bird smells faintly of a flowered forest, the rat smelling of expired cedar berry, the potion bottles and skulls are a variety of lavender, coconut, and previously mentioned scents. I wanted this piece to represent the sense of false security and peace we have surrounding us in our daily lives. Including the idea of a unicorn because it is this pure and beautiful creature that does no harm and is the embodiment of innocence and perfection much like the illusion that our privileged society has veiled over us. The fact that it is made of paper makes it very fragile, like our unpredictable futures, like the frailness of the world, I had filled it with synthetic stuffing and lights to give it more structure and to imply the idea of hope that shines through this delicate illusion of peace. This is not limited to just the idea of a country that can suffer plague, or go to war at any time, but also on a personal level to each individual where anything can happen today to turn a life upside down or how within the vast universe the disappearance of Earth would have no impact. I avoided adding color, allowing the natural ingredients in the paper to really shine, the rust on the plaster mold used to create the paper form and flower pulp affected the color via chemical reaction creating the blue-ish splotches adding to the taboo of the “tainted” ideology of peace and innocence in modern day society. Although the skulls imply death, the mediums and colors add more symbolism for the viewer to drink in that stretches beyond the translation of the form.

Inspired by a nightmare experienced during sleep paralysis. I've included both a color edit copy and colorless displayed together as one to portray the anxiety and sublime spumato that these dreams emit. You see my dream-self trapped atop a towering stalagmite bed, surrounded by a dripping, damp cavern. The shadows create the faces and forms that were roiling and disappearing before the apex event that made this dream into a terror. The black and white edit best translates the "on edge" fear and lack of emotional rationality, the softer color edit better emits the foggy numbness that comes with the lack of control in bodily movement.

ARTZ 490 Professor Ruth King

Inspired by my experiences walking around MT Urban areas and practicing artistic flow. In this piece I focused on trying to grasp the ideas, passing thoughts, and experiences during these candid strolls while avoiding “realism” to translate these. Car parts, trees, animals, MT scenery, streetlights, and shop windows have been abstracted to jigsaw and weave together to create a story.

One of my sketchbook assignments working with artistic flow, created while watching "The Cuphead Show" on repeat. Added my own twist to the art style of the show and hid little details in the background. In the upper left we can see Cuphead and Mugman’s home, down to the lower left we have King Dice’s “Mystery Prize Door”, and above on the upper right we see “Don’t Deal With The Devil”.

In this art piece I had refined artistic flow utilizing open geometric forms to activate the surrounding space. The sharp points are angled to keep viewers at a certain distance as they walk around the artwork keeping them in an attentive state to avoid being poked. On one side, these "spikes" almost float around the viewer, energy trapped inside, as if to jump and swallow them if they stand there too long. My intention is to stir a feeling of anxiety or tension within the viewer as they stand close to inspect the full form without the use of organic form, vibrant colors, or 2D art. The name “Locus Coeruleus” is for the part of our brain that is deeply involved with our response to stress and panic.  Named so as this artwork makes the viewer feel like they have to move a certain way in response to the anxiety of getting poked by the art and stressed at the angles that reach outward. Unless you are at a distance without the need to "react", you do not feel at ease investigating this form. Two separate sculptures create the singular “Throne” and both retain unique features and can stand as their own art piece. This is a highly interactive sculpture that can be set at any angle so long as it has at least three ground points to support the form. The arrangement is almost infinite and limited only by structural integrity, balance, and gravity.

Pomegranates represent a lot of things, but none of them are negative. Rebirth is what I used them for. I think that... self-harm is not an end. It's okay to fall off and come back on the right track, it’s okay to be hurting, and rebirth doesn't mean unmaking, it’s just making yourself better.
