I've been teaching this course at AUC for the past five years, and I also teach in the art and culture department at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (since 2014). I like teaching P&G because of the many connections that it reveals between time periods and cultures. My favorite art movement (if I had to choose) is Institutional Critique - from the 1960s, 70s and 80s. Some interesting facts about me: I'm from California and studied my BA in San Diego. I completed my PhD dissertation last year on strategies used by artists in the Netherlands and Flanders in 1980s and 1990s to disrupt art world conventions. Oh, and I am on a lifelong quest to perfect the best banana bread and brownie recipes. From Sandro Botticelli to Roy Lichtenstein, I could go on for hours! And when it comes to architecture... the Gothic cathedral in Amiens is truly incredible, as is the San Francisco El Grande Basilica back home in Madrid! I'm also 1st year, majoring in Sciences, however humanities, especially literature and history are my true loves. I'm very glad to be undertaking this course as I hope it will give me more background knowledge about art movements, allowing me to feel more conscious and competent when I wander around museums, which is an activity that I enjoy immensely. My favourite artist of late is Stephen Mackey, as I love how he combines delicacy with eeriness in his artworks. One art movement that I find particularly intriguing is Suprematism. I remember encountering the painting Black and White by Kazimir Malevitj at a museum in Stockholm a few years ago and was struck by the simple use of colours and fundamental geometrical shapes as a means to convey sensations.
