         <title>Southern colonies ( The Chesapeake)</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Georgia- became last British American colony to be founded in 1733. . Founded by James Oglethorp.&nbsp; Serves as a buffer between South Carolina and Florida. Between the Indians and plantation owners. Young white males who had debt and criminals lived in Georgia.&nbsp;<br>Carolinas- originally called the Carolinas. In 1729 they split into north and south Carolina. North a tobacco state and South was more indigo and rice. Poor whites and religious dissenters. Different forms of Christianity. Roanoke island original attempt to settle in North Carolina. By sir Walter Raleigh. He left to go get more stuff and it took to long and by the time he got back every one was gone. North Carolina experiment of colonization failed. Virginia-&nbsp; Chesapeake area. Jamestown Virginia 1607 Virgina company. King James the second created a joint stock company.&nbsp;<br>Most slaves came from West African coast. Originally captured by African coastal tribes who traded them to European and American buyers. 10-15 million Africans died or became slaves during 17th&amp;18th century. Slave codes- laws that the white plantation owners made to control the slaves. Stono rebellion- largest slave rebellion in colonial history. Stopped by militia after 25 whites were killed; eventually scores of slaves killed by militia and settlers. they were headed for Spanish Florida because they would be free and the united States couldn't get them. They didn't make it to&nbsp;Florida. &nbsp;<br><br><br></div>]]></description>

         <title>Puritan family</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>If a woman died the husband got her land. Responsibilities as wives and mother's defined women's lives. Family was a foundation of a community. Unmarried adults seemed a danger to society. Government and society: John Winthrop city on a hill 1630. Puritan's feared individualism. They operate in there own community not all together, see them selves as individual communities. Each town had its own congressional church. Private communities. Law of 1647 you were required to have a school. Not everyone who goes to church is a member. To be a full member you must have demonstrated you have experienced divine grace and a visible saint. Predestination- believed in predestination</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>New England confederation (1643) MBC, Plymouth, connectuit and New Haven. Indian wars: Pequot war(1636) King Phillips war (1675) bloodiest war ever fought on New England soil. for the first time in American history they have somewhat came together.&nbsp;<br>Dominion of New England: maritime economy- fishing, whaling, ship building and a merchant economy. Anglophiles: someone who is obsessed with English customs and culture.&nbsp; Solitary neglect- left us alone to govern ourselves as long as we kept getting them money. New controlling mechanism Dominion of New England. Set up several new navigation laws. Controlled where ships sale.&nbsp;<br>England's glorious revolution triggered first American revolution: when they arrested enos and sent him back to England and said we were done with navigation laws. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>George Whitefield&nbsp;</div><div>English orator who traveled extensively throughout the colonies.<br>His basic appeal was to the Bible. Most influential figure of great awakening. Founded Methodism.&nbsp;<br>Old light-hearted Orthodox and liberal clergymen deeply skeptical of emotionalism and theatrical antics of the revivalists.<br>New lights- supported awakening.<br>Results- split denominations, created competition in churches.<br>More religious choice and freedom. </div>]]></description>
