1.What does mindfulness look like in your classroom?
I play a lot of calming music throughout the day in my classroom. I play instrumental pop on Spotify which is all sounds and tunes. Its nice because it keeps my students focused on the task at hand. They love to hear a song that is familiar to them, without the words. Some begin to hum or quietly sing a part to themselves. I allow these moments to happen as long as they are not distracting.

2. Do you currently incorporate mindfulness?
During stressful times or moments that I know students may become anxious, like public speaking or a before a test, I will often put on a deep breathing GoNoodle exercise. The online tool has a mindfulness category that allows for quick "brain breaks" throughout the day. My students love participating in them whether they are up beat and get us moving, or are slow and peaceful to relax our nerves or behavior.

3. What do you think it means to be calm?
To me, to be calm means to be in a peaceful state of being. When you are calm, you don't feel overwhelmed or anxious. You may be relaxed and still or just simply happy and have a positive mood/attitude.

1.What does mindfulness look like in your classroom?
My students get very stressed before tests and quizzes, so for us being calm is being as prepared as we can. I do my best to give them helpful hints along the way of time remaining and if they are stuck to move on and go back to the question later on.

2. Do you currently incorporate mindfulness?
For something so very simple I always say hello and goodbye to the class and to have a great day. Little things like this can affect students mindfulness as well. I also always tell them it is okay to make mistakes and we just use them to learn from them especially in math!

3. What do you think it means to be calm?
Being calm to me is a feeling of comfort and relaxation. Where you can properly think and enjoy anything that you are encountering.

1. Mindfulness in my classroom is being aware of the interactions that one partakes in with others.
2. I have recently completed a 16 hour mindfulness cohort (mindfulschool.org) and have incorporated mindfulness practice of being self-aware and self-regulation.
3. I think that being calm means to be aware of others and your own self-regulation emotions.

First of all, thank you so much Gabrielle for the "ssso interesting" subject you shared with us. I've never had a teaching experience, but after reading this, I notice that teachers use mindfulness in different ways. Some of them like to crack the tension with jokes or sharing optimistic and happy stories. While others take break and make students get involved in a physical fun activities. It helps students and teachers as well, as their students return to the topic with more energy and better mode.
Thanks again!

I don't have a classroom- :(
I was a little concerned when I read the first article that implied that mindfulness in students with mental issues can have an adverse effect. It didn't make a lot of sense to me, but it is something to be aware of.
Calm can be defined differently for different people. If you are someone who is explosive, being calm is not yelling. For someone who is not explosive, being calm is quiet and serene.

1. Mindfulness is something that I try to incorporate in my classroom everyday. I use a variety of yoga videos and breathing techniques to help students to be calm and remind themselves to be mindful. I also incorporate this into writing once a week. We talk about some ways that we can be mindful that go along with read alouds. After reading we create a slogan to go with what we are talking about that day. For example when talking about perseverance we created the slogan "Never give up!" The students help me to write and it we hang it in the classroom to remind ourselves that if the work gets difficult to never give up!
2. I try to use breathing techniques and yoga videos when I notice the children are getting really riled up. This usually helps them to become more clam. I try to do it right before lunch as well especially if there is indoor recess.
3. To be calm I think it means to take a step back from what is causing you stress. Being calm means quiet and relaxing music. Feeling like a weight has been lifted off. I like to compare it to sitting on a beach at the end of the day when all you hear is the ocean and feel the breeze on your face.

I work in an informal classroom with students online typically I lead different discussions focused on mindfulness once a month. Our mindfulness discussions are usually optional, we have discussed on topics like mediating, yoga, positive affirmations, how to manage stress and empowerment. I share a resources like an article or video and post guiding questions students can use to response or post their reflection. I oversaw a one to one virtual STEM mentor programs for high school girls incorporating mindfulness into the programming helped me develop at better teaching relationship with students and allows students to connect with their peers. I do not think mindfulness means to be calm. I think mindfulness can have a different meaning for everyone, for me running is one of my mindfulness activities along with mediating and yoga. I found amongst my student’s positive affirmations is one of their top mindful activities. I see mindfulness as something that center your mind whatever it can be.

Mindfulness is being aware and present during class. This year I participated in a 16 hour mindfulness training that has really deepened my practice. Students practice mindfulness talk, expression and breathing to calm themselves.
