Shri Shankara  wears a tiger skin around his white body.

That  bhasma or ash is smeared all over.

He is often seen slaying demons.

As he wields a trishul as his weapon.

Lord Shambho is seen peaceful and fierce.
He is the cosmic dancer.
That moves to the beat of his damaru.
Bearing beautiful beads his Rudraksh.

 

Vishnu would chant the name of Shiva a thousand times every day by offering one lotus flower against each chant. This goes on for many years before Shiva comes out of the trance one day. Not knowing that Shiva has come out of his trance, Vishnu continues his chanting for the day.

Shiva decides to play a trick on Vishnu, and secretly removes one lotus from the bunch that Vishnu had arranged. After Vishnu chants for 999 times, he realizes that one flower is missing from his collection. He immediately plucks out his eye and offers it at the feet of the Shiva.

Impressed by Vishnu’s devotion, Shiva tells him to ask for a boon. Vishnu asks him to give the power to defeat the demons to save all the gods. Lord Shiva gives him a round disc, called the ‘Sudarshana Chakra’, which has the power to kill anything.

Makar Sankranti is celebrated on January 14th every year according to the solar calendar.

Makar Sankranti celebrates the sun's journey into the northern hemisphere, and the start of spring. It marks the start of warmer and longer days as compared to the nights.

Different ways of celebration across India

NORTH INDIA

The festival of Sankranti is known as Lohri in the North. December and January are the coldest months in the northern part of India. Hence, huge bonfires are lit for warmth on the eve of Sankranti and friends and family get together and dance around the fire.

SOUTH INDIA

In South, Sankranti is celebrated as the harvest festival of Pongal. It lasts for 3 days. Prayers and prasad (food offered to God) are offered to the different Gods to thank them for helping to grow the crops.

WEST INDIA

Sankranti is celebrated with great fervor in Western India, where it is called as "Uttarayan". Children and adults enjoy flying kites. Lot of kite-flying competitions are also organized on that day.

You will also be amazed to know that our minds are also like these colorful kites. You already know that the strong kites can fly high all day long, while the weaker ones are cut soon and they fall back to the ground.

Devi Saraswati is as white as the moon, clad in a white dress, bedecked in white ornaments, radiating with beauty, holding a book and a pen in her hands (the book represents knowledge).

She is generally shown to have four arms, but sometimes just two. 

The four hands hold items with symbolic meaning — a pustaka (book or script), a mālā (rosary, garland), a water pot and a musical instrument (vīnā).

The book she holds symbolizes the Vedas. A mālā of crystals, representing the power of meditation. A pot of water represents the purifying power to separate right from wrong, the clean from the unclean, and essence from the inessential. The most famous feature on Saraswati is a musical instrument called a veena, represents all creative arts and sciences. 

A hamsa or swan is often shown near her feet. Devi Saraswati is also referred to as Hamsavāhini, which means “she who has a hamsa as her vehicle”.

Krishna's birthday is celebrated every year by Hindus on Krishna Janmashtami according to the Hindu calendar, which falls in late August or early September of the Gregorian calendar. Krishna is usually depicted with a flute in his hand.

Meaning:

2. Mahamrityunjaya mantra

4. Shiva Gayatri Mantra

The third day of Navratri is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga in the form of Devi 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐚.

𝟒. 𝐊𝐮𝐬𝐡𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚

The fourth lunar day of Navratri signifies the worship of the Devi in the form of 𝐊𝐮𝐬𝐡𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚 Mata.

The eight day of Navratri (Ashtami) is devoted to Devi in the form of 𝐌𝐚𝐡𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐮𝐫𝐢.

𝟗. 𝐒𝐢𝐝𝐝𝐡𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐫𝐢

The ninth and final day of Navratri (Naumi) is dedicated to Devi 𝐒𝐢𝐝𝐝𝐡𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐫𝐢.

Devi 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐩𝐮𝐭𝐫𝐢 is worshipped on the first lunar day of Navratri. She is the embodiment of the collective power of Brahma, Vishnu,and Mahesh and the Mother of Nature. After the self-immolation of Goddess Sati, Goddess Parvati took birth as the daughter of the Himalayas. In Sanskrit 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐚 means mountain and thus she is known as 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐩𝐮𝐭𝐫𝐢, the daughter of the mountain. She is commonly depicted on a white bull with a trishul in hand. 

Devi 𝐁𝐫𝐚𝐡𝐦𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐢 is worshipped on the second lunar day of Navratri. She represents supreme immaculateness, purity, goodness, divine grace and beauty. She blesses one with knowledge, determination, happiness, and academic perseverance. She is often depicted holding a jaap mala and a kamandal.

The third day of Navratri is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga in the form of Devi 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐚. 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐚 means moon which she wears a crescent moon on her forehead; the sound of her 𝐠𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐚 or bell strikes fear and expels evil ones hence her name 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐚. She is also portrayed bearing ten hands and riding on a tiger. She represents peace and serenity.

The fourth lunar day of Navratri signifies the worship of the Devi in the form of 𝐊𝐮𝐬𝐡𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚 Mata. She is illustrated bearing eight hands and seated on a tiger. She emanates light and energy and is known for her contribution to the galaxy and universe as the “creator of the universe”. She blesses us with fulfilment and reassurance.

Devi 𝐒𝐤𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐚 is the form worshipped on the fifth day of Navratri. In this form, she is displayed seated on a lion, bearing four hands, two of which holds lotus flowers. On her lap, seats her son, Skand, leader of the divine army. Thus, she is known as 𝐒𝐤𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐚, mother of Skand or Lord Kartikeya.

The sixth lunar day is devoted to the worship of Devi 𝐊𝐚𝐭𝐲𝐚𝐲𝐚𝐧𝐢. She is depicted seated on a lion and on one hand she holds a sword and on another hand she clutches a lotus. She is a warrior.  She appeared as the result of severe spiritual penance of the Great sage Rishi Katyayan. She is the daughter of Rishi Katyayan. 

Devi 𝐊𝐚𝐥𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐫𝐢 is worshipped on the seventh day (Saptami) of Navratri. She is fierce and is portrayed in a dark hue or complexion like the night with dishevelled hair, bearing four hands, she holds a sword and is seated on a donkey. She represents peace, prayer, conquering ignorance and bestows blessings of fearlessness to her devotees. She exhales the burning flame which is the fire of truth which burns delusions.

The eight day of Navratri (Ashtami) is devoted to Devi in the form of 𝐌𝐚𝐡𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐮𝐫𝐢. Maha means great; Gauri means fair or beautiful one. She has a fair complexion and possesses youthfulness. She is seated on a bull and holds a trishul. She exhibits fearlessness and brings peace and solace to the hearts of her devotees.

The ninth and final day of Navratri (Naumi) is dedicated to Devi 𝐒𝐢𝐝𝐝𝐡𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐫𝐢. She is commonly viewed seated on a lotus and has four arms. She is called 𝐒𝐢𝐝𝐝𝐡𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐫𝐢 because she blesses her devotees with four forms of worldy gains which are dharm, arth, kaam, and moksha. She is worshipped for complete success in spiritual endeavours.

Indian mythology is full of tales that inspire awe and wonder. The tale I am about to share is one such story.

Once upon a time, thousands of years ago, there was a tyrant called Mahishasura.

He was part demon and part buffalo.

Mahishasura meditated for thousands of years so he could please Lord Brahma and in return be blessed with immortality and power.

After much penance, his plan worked.

Lord Brahma came to him and said, “I am very pleased with your devotion. Ask me any boon that you desire.”

Without batting an eyelid, the arrogant Mahishasura said, “Lord, I don’t want any man or God to be able to kill me.”

Brahma raised his hand in blessing and said, “Tathastu. So be it, my child.”

A twinkle in Brahma’s eyes gave away the fact that maybe Mahishasura had left a loophole while seeking his blessing. Time would tell.

Armed with this boon, Mahishasura considered himself immortal, as no man or God could lay hands on him. He went berserk. In his rage and pride, he practically destroyed the Earth. The lands were soon covered in his darkness and his massacres were widespread. Not only that, he chased away the Gods out of heaven.

Scared, the Gods went running to Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva and narrated their misfortune.

They pleaded for protection and said that if something was not done soon, the heavens and the earth and all the beings there, would be destroyed.

The lords Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva were hopping mad. They conferred for a moment. And then they held each other and started to radiate a blinding light. A light never seen before. A light so bright, that even the sun paled in comparison. Seeing this, the other Gods also joined in and the light shone even brighter.

Out of this beautiful light, was born the ten armed Goddess Durga, the embodiment of Adi Shakti.

Being a woman, there was nothing stopping Goddess Durga from killing Mahishasura, as his boon only protected him from men and Gods. Such was the cunning and smartness of Lord Brahma.

One by one the gods approached her and gifted her a dazzling array of weapons.

The mighty Sudarshan chakra was given to her by Lord Vishnu.

Lord Shiva gave her a dangerous Trishul.

She got a Quiver full of arrows from Lord Varuna, the God of the Sea.

Lord Yama, the God of Death, gave her a powerful Sceptre.

Lord Indra, a Thunderbolt, to rattle the earth.

Lord Vishwakarma, the Architect of the Gods, a menacing axe.

Kaal, or Time, gave her a sharp sword.

She got a kamandal, or pitcher, from Lord Brahma.

Agni gifted a flaming dart.

Airavata, Indra’s white elephant, gave Goddess Durga a bell.

Its noise helped her confuse the demons.

The mighty Himalayas gave Goddess Durga a lion to ride upon.

Armed with ten weapons gifted to her by the gods, one for each arm, she looked ready to show Mahishasura who the boss was and went into battle with him.

Durga battled Mahishasura for ten whole days.

On the tenth day, she managed to chop off his head with her sword.

At last, the balance of life was restored. Life came bouncing back on the trees, rivers, skies and the heavens.

To celebrate this victory, we perform Durga Puja every year and remember the great heroics shown by Goddess Durga.

Durga Puja is a ten day carnival in Bengal.

On the last day, Vijay Dashami, we celebrate Goddess Durga’s killing of Mahishasura.

This day is also called Dussehra and we celebrate Lord Rama killing Ravana too. Did you know that before Lord Rama went to Lanka, he prayed to Goddess Durga for her protection and blessings?

Each of the nine days of Navratri are dedicated to the nine avatars of Goddess Durga - the Goddess of Shakti or power. Each of the nine colors of Navratri symbolizes the quality of the Devi.

Yellow: The first day of Navratri is the first incarnation of Devi – Shailaputri - daughter of the mountains. She is the absolute form of Mother Nature and symbolizes strength. Yellow is the color of brightness, happiness, and cheer. It is a wonderful way to start off the nine-day celebration.

Green: The second day of Navratri is the second incarnation of Goddess Durga – Brahmacharani – the female seeking spiritual knowledge. In this form, Goddess Durga or Parvati goes to the verdant mountains to do penance. This is where her prospective consort, Lord Shiva is. She joins him here in asceticism. Hence, green color symbolizes growth, nature, and energy.

Grey: The third incarnation of Devi is Chandraghanta. She wears a gray-colored half-moon on her forehead. The gray also symbolizes her mood, ever ready to fight to destroy the foes of her devotees.

Orange: The fourth incarnation of Goddess Durga is Kushmanda. The luminosity and brightness of this Devi, with her bewitching smile, light up the sun. She is powerful enough to live in the Sun. Hence, the color orange symbolizes her happiness and energy.

White: The fifth incarnation of Devi is Skandamata – mother of Skanda or Kartikeya, the war-god. The Devi holding her baby in her lap is a symbol of the purity of a mother’s love. It also symbolizes peace, purity, and prayer in devotees’ hearts when they worship her. Hence, the color white.

Red: The sixth incarnation of Devi is Katyayani. She is a fierce form of Goddess Durga believed to be formed out of the anger of the Gods. Therefore, the color red is associated with her. Red also symbolizes action and vigor.

Royal Blue: The seventh incarnation of Devi is Kaalratri. She is a destructive form of the Goddess and is also called Kali. Her powerful energy is embodied in the color blue.

Pink: The eighth incarnation of Devi is Mahagauri. She is the fulfiller of all desires. The color pink symbolizes hope and freshness of perspective.

Purple: The ninth incarnation of Devi is Siddhidatri. She is the giver of knowledge and helps you achieve your aspirations. Hence, the color purple represents ambition and power.

Meaning;

O, the son of Anjana and Vayu, please I pray to you for intellect and knowledge.

Birth Story:

Once upon a time, in the mountains of Meru, there was the great sage named Gautam. A monkey-couple, Kesari and Anjana lived nearby the ashram. Anjana was once a heavenly maiden, who was cursed and transformed into a monkey woman. She would be freed from this curse only if she gave birth to an incarnation of Lord Shiva.

The reason Anjana was cursed was once when she was wandering on earth, she saw a monkey meditating deeply in a forest. At the instant she saw the monkey acting like a holy sage. She was unable to control her laughter. She made fun of the monkey but the monkey ignored her foolish behavior. She did not only continue her laughter but even threw some stones at the monkey and continued to do so till the holy monkey lost his patience. He opened his eyes that sparkled with anger and he was indeed a powerful holy sage who had transformed into a monkey to do his spiritual meditation. He with ferocious voice cursed her that ‘She has performed an evil task of disturbing a sage’s meditation and so was cursed to take the form of a monkey and that she will be relieved from the curse only if she gives birth to a mighty son, an incarnation of Shiva’.

Anjana blessed with a son:

Anjana’s dedicated prayers and meditation to Shiva without any food or water soon gave her fruitful results. Lord Shiva was impressed with her prayers and wished to bless her with a son who will be immortal.

Soon Anjana gave birth to a monkey-faced child and they named him as Anjaneya (meaning ‘son of Anjana’). Anjaneya has been called by many names such as Hanuman, Maruti (Vayu’s other name), Pawanputra and so on. He played an important role in Ramayana and was a great devotee of Lord Rama and Sita Devi.

Epitome of strength you are Lord Hanuman

There in none equal to you in power, to compare.

The greatest devotee of Lord Rama

You showed the world what devotion is,

You fought a war to uphold dharma

And gave the good people, new lease.

Oh monkey god, give me courage and strength

Let your legend live on for infinite length,

And among gods may your place be high.

Meaning:

Like many other gayatri mantras, Ram gayatri mantra is depended on for gaining protection. This mantra addresses Ram as the son of Dasharat and the husband of Mother Sita. It prays the Lord to give clarity of thought and the power of right judgement.

Meaning:
"We sacrifice to Tryambaka the fragrant, increaser of prosperity.

During childhood when you attempted to engulf SUN (considering it to be a fruit), you fell and the world was filled with sorrow as you were the ray of hope to them.

As expected you recovered from the disease afflicted by Sun, hence lifted the will of the people in the Earth.

Baali ki traas kapees basai giri, jaat mahaaprabhu panth nihaaro ।

Chownki mahaa muni saap diyo tab chahiy kaun bichaar bichaaro ।

Kai dwij roop liwaay mahaa prabhu so tum daas ke sok niwaaro ॥

Meaning:

You were protecting Sugriva from Bali by asking him to live in a mountain,

where Bali was not allowed to enter due to the curse of ‘Chauki saint’.

(When Shri Ram was searching Sita along with Lakshman), Sugriva doubted that they were searching Sugriva as instructed by Bali,

Then you disguised as a Brahmin, met Shri Ram and even HE killed Bali eventually.

So you relieved a devotee (Sugriva) of his sorrow.

Angad ke sang lain gaye siya, khoj kapees yah baain uchaaro ।

Sri Sankatmochan Hanuman

Meaning:

You went with Angad and others to fetch the information of Sita,

At the sea -coast when rejoined Angad said,” We will not remain alive if we returned without Sita’s information.”

All became dead tired there and then you brought the required information of Sita.

Hence saved the life of the entire army.

Raavan traas dayee siya ko sab, raakshashi so kahi sok nivaaro ।

Meaning:

When Ravan was tormenting Sita by instructing his female maids who were caretaker at Ashok Vatika to trouble her,

You reached that very moment and killed many enemies.

When out of trouble Sita asked fire from nature (Ashok tree),

You gave Shri Ram’s ring to Sita and delivered the message of Shri Ram.

Hence you gave new life to SITA by giving her hope which in turn boosted her confidence.

Baan lagyo ur lakshiman ke tab, praan taje sut raavan maaro ।

Lai griha baidya sushen samet, tabai giri dron su beer upaaro ।

Meaning:

When an arrow of Meghnath struck deep in the heart of Lakshman,

You brought ‘Sushen Vaidya’ along with his home who asked YOU to bring ‘Sanjeevani herb’

which you finally brought along with ’Dron mountain’

and you revived Lakshman.

Hence you saved the life of Lakshman by giving him new life.

Raavan yudh ajaan kiyo tab, naag ki phaas sabhi sir daaro ।

Ko nahin jaanat hai jag mein kapi sankat mochan naam tiharo ॥ 6 ॥

Meaning:

When Ravan attacked the Shri Ram army by tieing them by snakes at night when all were in deep sleep,

the whole army including Shri Ram was in deep trouble.

Then you brought Gaduda (the big eagle) to save the entire army.

Hence you saved the entire army including the life of Shri Ram.

Bandhu samet jabai ahiraavan, lai raghunath pataal sidhaaro ।

When Ahiravan along with his brother kidnapped Shri Ram and Lakshman to Paatal (netherworld),

when they were almost finished with the rituals to go for human sacrifice,

You appeared before them and killed Ahiravan.

Hence you saved the lives of Shri Ram and Lakshman again.

Meaning:

You have done great deeds for the Gods/Goddess and even for the Almighty Shri Ram,

O My Lord! Give me a kind glance, and tell (notify) me which obstacles are not removed by your glance,

(for your glance can provide me the real dedication and patience to do any impossible task even)

O My Lord! I ask you to remove any obstacle as you are my guru.

Day 1 - Ghastasthapana - Orange

The Goddess Durga is worshiped on all nine days of the festival so that she may usher in prosperity and good luck. The first day of Navratri, which is also known as Ghastasthapana, witnesses the holy pooja of the Goddess. The day is very auspicious as it is the start of the festival. The Goddess is dressed in orange attire on this day. According to tradition, people wear clothes of orange color on this day.

Day 2 - Dwitiya - White

The second day on which Goddess Durga is Worshiped as Brahmacharini, is known as Dwitiya. On this day, people worship the Goddess so that she bestows upon them emancipation, as well as prosperity. On this day people wear attires of white color. This form of the Goddess is considered to be extremely pious.

Day 3 - Tritiya - Red

The third day of Navratri is known as Tritiya. On this day Goddess Durga is worshiped as Chandraghanta. Chandraghanta symbolizes bravery and fortitude. On this day the Goddess is dressed in a red saree.

Day 4 - Chaturthi - Royal Blue

The fourth day of Navratri is known as Chaturthi and on this day Goddess Durga is worshiped in the form of Kushmanda. It is believed that as the Goddess laughed, the universe generated. On this day, the Goddess is dressed in royal blue and people can be seen wearing attire that are of the same color.

Day 5 - Panchami - Yellow

The day five of the festival is known as Panchami. On this day, the Goddess is worshiped as Skandamata, the mother of Kartikeya. People worship the goddess so that she may usher in peace and prosperity into their home. People seek the blessings of the Goddess. Yellow is the color of this day and devotees should be dressed in this color.

Day 6 - Sashti - Green

Day six is known as Sashti. Green is the color of the day and people are advised to wear attires of this color on Sashti. On this Day, people worship Goddess Durga in the form of Katyayani. According to a legend sage Katya wanted to welcome the Goddess as his daughter. To please the Goddess, Katya performed many formalities. The Goddess was finally pleased with Katya and took birth in his home as his daughter and was known as Katyayani.

Day 7 - Saptami - Grey

Day seven is known as Saptami. On this day, Goddess Durga is worshiped in the form of Kalratri. Kalratri, who is also known as Subhankari, means a dark and black knight. The Goddess not only protects her worshipers from all kinds of troubles and negativity of life, but also provides them with utmost happiness. Grey is the color to wear on the seventh day that is Saptami.

Day 8 - Ashtami - Purple

Day eighth is known as Ashtami. On this day, Goddess Durga is worshiped as Maha Gauri. The attire that devotes will wear on this day should be of purple color. The Goddess purifies her worshipers and also forgives their sins. The Goddess as Maha Gauri performed a penance so that she may have Lord Shiva as her husband. During the course of the penance, dust accumulated on her body and Lord Shiva washed it with the sacred waters of the Ganga. Saraswati Mata Puja is also organized on this day.

Day 9 - Ram Navami - Peacock Green

Day nine is known as Navami and it is the last day of the festival. On this day, people worship the Goddess as she bestows prosperity on all her devotees. Peacock Green is the color of the day and devotees should dress in attire that is of this color.
