When the nurse addresses her as "Mrs.Cooper" Cara's mom immediately corrects her. The reader can infer that Mrs.Blair does not appreciate when people call her that. That is what makes the reader infer such a thing. This is a very significant part of the story because it reveals not only the fact that Cara has a dad and a step-dad but Cara's mom's and her dad's relationship with one another. This piece of information could add on to the plot because the reader may get to learn how Cara's mom and dad's relationship affects her which could possibly add on to the plot. This phrase actually has a neutral connotation. Thomas, the new Greenbean to the Glade is confused on why everyone is calling him that. The author doesn't really mention if being the "Greenbean" is a good thing or not. So, using this knowledge the reader understands that being the "Greenbean" could and could not be a good thing depending on who and how someone interprets it. Connotation: A ranking that symbolizes being first, the best, being powerful than others. 
The number "One" is the highest ranking you could fall under in the caste system of Illea. The people of Illea fall under a caste system in which a simple number determines your social status. One being the highest and Eight being the lowest. Being a One means your royalty, so I guess you could say this number has a positive connotation.  I believe that the author used the number "1" to show the reader how the castes later affect the characters in the book. America is a Five and is often disturbed by the idea of a castes. She thinks it is inefficient and horrible to put people under a category. And Prince Maxon being a One and not being able to put an end to castes causes problems between their relationship. This is significant because this piece of information gives the chance for the reader to infer the outcome of the competition. Now that the reader knows America has a lot more people supporting her, she might win the competition and be Maxon's. This is what the reader can learn from this sentence.

While The Elite were receiving an etiquette lesson, bricks came flying through the windows. Everyone immediately fell to the ground, crawling their way out of the room and into a safer area. After reaching the basement America thinks of how ridiculous it was to be hiding. On page 3, it states, "...I tried to reconcile myself to the hours that would be wasted, hiding like mice." As this point into the scene the reader can infer that America was sick and tired of hiding instead of doing something to help. Anything. Later in the scene, America argues to Silvia, her teacher, that going into the basement is useless. So how does this scene help answer my annotation question? Well, this incident happening in the beginning of the story tells the reader that this may happen more often in the book and that is a big conflict. Besides this, the reader notices America's feelings during this scene. America is irritated that she is being held back from doing anything  and upset that she can't do anything to help. This shows the reader that rebel attacks affect America's emotions, personality and characteristics. Maxon and the rebels know that he is unable to get rid of the caste system unless he is King. That is why they also request to see America. The rebels wish to see a sign to promise that Maxon will, in the future, get rid of castes. This sign requested for Maxon to choose America as Illea's future princess. This part of the scene is what helps the reader answer the annotation question. After asking to pick America, Maxon loses his temper. On page 43, Maxon says, "I will not have anyone else telling me who I can and cannot marry! This is my life you're playing games with!" This quote gets the reader to think how this scene may affect America and Maxon's relationship. Both Georgia and August leave shortly after Maxon's little outburst, leaving Maxon and America alone. The reader learns how heart-broken America was after Maxon's objection to choosing her. Even before this scene, America and Maxon haven't been doing well but this made it worse. As she expresses to the reader, "His quick objection to choosing me only drove home the pain of his words yesterday in the library." A take on the Report with the Elite, a news channel that reports all about Illea and it's events, is interrupted with a message for the King and everyone else. It is from the rebels. It states that they will be attacking by caste. Each Elite is from a different caste, and the rebels plan to attack anyone from the same caste as an Elite. The reason for this horrible plan of theirs is to force the Elite into abandoning the Selection, meaning no princess for Prince Maxon. After hearing this news, everyone is left speechless. America starts to worry of what might happen to her loved ones. But what she couldn't bare is the fact that she is the reason all Fives will be hurt. Not only this but America is worried by how the public may think of her. As she states, on page 68, "The longer we held on, the more the people would hate us for risking their lives." This much into the scene the reader thinks of how this scene is an answer to the annotation question. This scene shows the reader that rebel attacks affect America's loved ones as well as her social status. They both wanted to get more information on the attack the Southern rebels were executing.  They find out that about three hundred people have been killed so far because of the rebels. America is terrified. Both of them ask if there is anything they can do and are pleased to find out that the people are taking precautions in case of an attack, all because of America's speech. After discussing ways on how to help more, it's time to leave. On their way out, Aspen finds men surrounding their escape truck, threatening to hurt them if they don't give them food. While they both argue, one of the men recognizes America. America and Maxon immediately run away, having Aspen and another guard hold the men off. They hear gun shots but don't look back. Maxon and America split up, that's when she notices she's been shot. On page 113, she narrates, "...I saw something wet coming from a rip in my sleeve. I'd been shot." Being left all alone, all she could think of is what will happen next? Lucky, she was found by a girl who aids her and is soon reunited with Maxon and the others. In this scene, America almost loses her life because of rebels. When her maid, Anne, comes to aid her, she asks for help from "Mallory." That is when America notices Marlee standing by the doorway. Marlee was kicked out of the Selection after the world found out about her affair with a guard she caught feelings for. They both now still live in the palace but hide behind fake names. America realizes that Mallory is Marlee's code name. America melts away in happiness after seeing her. She tells the reader, on page 126, "...but I felt a great relief knowing she would be with me." This scene is an example of a positive way the rebels impact America. Maxon finally makes his choice, even though he knew it was going to be America from the beginning. But that was before Maxon finds out about America and Aspen's "affair." After Maxon finds out that America has hidden the fact that she dated one of his guards, he changes his decision. He decides to choose Kriss, a rebel who made her way through to the Selection. Right when everything is prepared to announce Maxon's choice, all the guards suddenly pull out a red fabric and wrap it out around their foreheads. And a girl from the selected is shot down. Everyone quickly realizes what's going on, screaming and running. Just then, a rebel points the gun at America, but is saved by Maxon. Maxon takes the bullet for her. America is stunned and runs to Maxon. On page 295, he tells her, "Break my heart. Break it a thousand times if you like. It was only yours to break anyway."  This scene was one of the last events in the book and it was a big one. Because not only does it show that America and Maxon will forever be together, but that the rebels will always be a big part in America's life. The reader can conclude many things from this scene. One of the being that rebels have affected, not only America and her life, but the people a part of her life. Maxon, America's love, is hurt because of them. But this scene doesn't just affect America negatively but in a way positively. Because of this attack, Maxon reveals that he still and will always love America no matter how many she hurts him.
