Romans celebrated the birth of Mithra, their sun god, on December 25th.
As Christianity spred across Europe, since no one knew Jesus’s birth date, they adapted the ritual into a celebration of His birthday.

The Romans also decorated their temples with fir trees.
The tradition was incorporated into the Christian faith in Germany during the 1500’s. They decorated trees in their homes with sweets, lights, and toys.

He was inspired by St. Nicholas, and in honor of his passing, December 6th was declared as St. Nicholas day.
Later in time, each European culture created their own versions of St. Nicholas
In the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Lorraine, France, and parts of Germany, he was known as Sinter Klaas, which is where the name Santa Claus came from.
