They were not allowed to have a dog, but with Shush's obedience and cuteness he was able to stay. Sugar is not coping so well. She has to leave her old school since it is far from the shelter and her friends. At her new school, she knows nobody. The main character Drake has been at the Rig for about 3 months. He has convinced his cellmate Tristan, who knows a lot about technology, to help him take off his wristband. While Drake and Tristan struggle to take off the band, Whittmore, who is head of the Alliance, is coming to visit the Rig.  A couple of days before Whittmore arrives Tristan manages to unlock the wristband. Even with this breakthrough Drake is not even close to escaping from the Rig.
