In American culture, naming seems pretty simple, but it becomes complex when the child is grown and marriage becomes a possibility for some women. In the United States, it is typical and socially accepted for a woman to take her husband's name legally after marriage. Alternatively, in some Spanish speaking countries that use two last names, it is typical for a girl to be born with both her mother's and father's last name, to legally retain that name, but socially use the name of her partner after marriage. For example, in the US, a girl may be born Julia Smith. In Argentina, her name may look more like Julia Smith Rodriguez (to represent both paternal and maternal maiden names), and only the maternal name would change after marriage.

In addition to keeping both family names, oftentimes young adults have no applied pressure to move out on their own. Instead, they are encouraged to stay home and further the family unit. This gives the older generations the opportunity to rest and watch over the youngest generation and other generations have the opportunity to aid fiscally. For example, coworkers of mine live in a household with grandparents, their three children and four grandchildren under the same roof. Abula watches the kids while the girls I work with and their brother are away during the day. This gives the kids time with both their grandparent and parent, and offers the parents: my friends, to work relatively guilt free. Grandparents play a very important role in a Spanish speaking house, as they have the most interaction with the youngest generation. They are typically a role model when it comes to teaching the children everyday tasks, like cleaning and cooking, to religious studies in more religious households.

Children in Spanish speaking countries are raised to respect their elders, and this is instilled by the way they live as a family unit. Children are raised with the emphasis on family from the beginning. The children are involved and have their own part to play in the family unit, using chores and small household tasks. This ultimately makes everyone feel important and necessary to the everyday running of the household.
