Parents and professionals using correct terminology can allow for reduced misunderstanding, stigmas, and increased normalization of sexual and anatomy related conversations especially in the younger generation who can be impressionable. Creating an open environment with correct terminology, whether it is with caregivers or professionals can allow people to feel understood, make boundaries for themselves, and creates open discussion for clarification and questions. Futhermore, this can help foster a healthy view on sexuality for younger generations, without stigmas and judgement.

When parents and professionals use the correct language and terminology when discussing anatomy and sexuality it sets the tone for younger audiences, where they will repeat the terms they hear from others. This way when we all use the correct terms it will help children understand their bodies and reduce embarrassment regarding these topics. Using the correct terms also ensures that everyone knows what is being referred to rather than using short forms or abbreviations.

Parents and professionals should use correct language and terminology because using slang terms for genitals and sexual behaviour's can have a overtly sexual meaning and can make serious conversations feel more 'unserious'. In my experience, adolescents will tend to find slang terms for anatomy and sexuality as funny, embarrassing, and even gross. In order to de-stigmatize certain phrases, or emphasize the importance of certain conversations, it is important to educate people using scientifically accurate terminology. In doing so, it will ensure that conversations are had in a professional, judgmental free environment, and will destigmatize conversations that are likely already uncomfortable to have.

It's important for parents and professionals to use the correct language to reduce confusion, stigma, and promote a holistic view of gender and sexuality that includes cross-cultural knowledge and ancient wisdom about the human experience. I think of terms like two-spirit in First Nations communities or Fa'afafine in Samoan culture, there are many aspects to human sexuality that are neglected in the western worldview which can lead to negative outcomes in quality of life.

Parents and healthcare professionals should be using accurate language regarding genitalia, as doing so allows for there to be less stigma regarding these words and lessens the shame and embarrassment typically associated with them. This will allow children to not have shame regarding their own body, and can also increase their safety and awareness of what is and isn't okay for others to do/say to them.

I did a research paper on this topic before and found that using the correct language when discussing anatomy and sexuality with children can actually help in preventing children from being sexually assaulted/exploited. When they are knowledgable about their body, they recognize what is appropriate and inappropriate for people to do and have the ability to properly disclose if something bad does unfortunately happen to them. I think it is also important for them to know what their anatomy is so they are not confused or insecure when their bodies change during puberty, and I think this is especially important for young girls. I think that even today, female anatomy is such a taboo and is not researched enough if that makes sense.

Parents using the correct terminology when referencing sexuality and/or sexual anatomy can aid children in developing the knowledge of what is and is not appropriate and or expected in regards to their experience. For instance, in cases of abuse or neglect, having the correct terminology to describe what is happening to and/or with their own bodies can be the difference between getting help and going unnoticed. In cases of abnormality in development, again, the child would have the correct terminology to describe and discuss any problems which promotes body safety.

It can lessen stigma surrounding sex and sexual wellness, including making folks more comfortable when they have concerns regarding their sexual wellbeing as they have the correct language to use. Children who have the correct anatomical nouns to describe their body can also help them form healthy boundaries and safety.

If a child is in the event where something needs to be reported, it's best for them to know exactly what / where it happened to clearly communicate. When creating these new nicknames for things it inadvertently contributes to the underlaying stigma that surrounds body parts and contributes to a purity culture that can be harmful. it also reduces the confusion that can come later on from learning the proper names/ functions and reduces the questions about why we hide the proper names.
