Define: Vision Statement

My vision as a school counselor is to enhance all students' learning processes by focusing on the development of academic skills, social/emotional, and career development skills by creating a supportive environment. I believe that all students have the innate ability to become successful if they have the opportunity to develop their whole self.

School counselors and their programs are crucial to the mission and success of every school (ASCA, n.d.). As a counselor, I will strive to be a lifelong learner to improve and enhance the experience of every student and their family as much as possible. The role and responsibilities of the school counselor are vast and can significantly impact individuals' experience with their education, mental health, and career development. As a student, I will continue to grow in my self-awareness to provide these services effectively.

Goal

This lesson plan aims to discuss and develop empathy in students. Empathy is essential to developing skills necessary to regulate aggression, increases inclusivity among children and their peers, and allows children to take on broader perspectives under challenging situations (Thompson & Melchior, 2020). Developing empathy at a young age will assist students in many other aspects school counselors tend to focus on, such as bullying, social/emotional domains, and multiculturalism. Thompson and Melchior (2020) expressed that this lesson plan can be used for different age groups if modified.

Challenges

I have chosen to work in secondary school with students in grades 6th - 12th. This lesson plan uses bibliotherapy, which is an interactive read-aloud. I may encounter challenges in finding an age-appropriate story that includes methods of building empathy (Thompson & Melchior, 2020). I will also have to develop strategies to encourage the students to stay focused and take the activity seriously enough to implement what they learned.
