Summary of the WombOX

WombOX is a pulse oximeter prototype that can be inserted through the womb and placed around one of the fetus's extremities during minimally invasive fetal surgeries. The device was created to improve fetal hypoxia during surgery. It is a nintinol wire loop that is compressed into a delivery sheath to be inserted into the womb. Once the sheath is inserted, the ninitol reacts to the body temperature and expands the loop. Once the wire is expanded, it can then be placed around the fetus's arm or leg, where blood oxygen is detected through LEDs similar to current pulse oximeters. Upon completion of the surgery, the oximeter is removed from the fetus's extremity, inserted back into the delivery sheath, and removed from the womb.

This easy-to-use, cost effective, and minimally invasive device, provides physicians the ability to more accurately assess fetal-well being during procedures when the fetus is subjected to general anesthesia and other medications. Because of its easy application and removal, it is timely, and does not add any significant time to the procedure.

The need for the WombOX is an increasing issue, due to the rising availability of fetal surgeries and interventions. I believe that this device could help improve fetal procedures by directly decreasing the occurrence of fetal hypoxia. Also, because it is low in cost to produce and minimally invasive it should be an easy device to incorporate as a new standard of care to intrauterine fetuses.

My strengths: strategic, relator, competition, achiever, and focus

For my team, I would like to include Carter, Daisy, Louis, Pablo, and Randall. Carter is strong in communication and could be trusted to not only organize and enforce communication between teammates, but also be our communicator with other interdisciplinary members and organizations. Daisy is our developer. She is capable of recognizing and encouraging each team member in their own strength, while also helping to develop our new innovation. Louis is continuously seeking ways to learn, and will prove to be an excellent researcher, while also quickly learning and implementing what we are developing. Pablo is our positivity when things get hard or frustrating. He is our reminder for why we are working diligently to create this prototype. Last, Randall is our responsible member. He provides us with loyalty and serves our personal accountability partner.
