The author portrays the main character (Arden) as a girl with a very bad reputation, troubled, reckless, and insane. She is a Hollywood star that is a party girl which has led her to create a very bad image for herself. Arden left all of her friends behind for fame and to pursue her acting career. Although all of this fame is great and she is having a good time she has been up to no good. She is nothing like she used to be and there's no hope for her reputation anymore. Now that Arden is famous everywhere she goes there is paparazzi so she could never get away with anything. She has been making bad decisions and because of how famous she the whole world knows what path she really is going down. For example, "If you know, then why did I wake up this morning to photos of you high out of your mind, hooking up with multiple people at some party the night before a shoot?" (Page 16) This examples show exactly what is really happening to Arden even though it looks like she is perfect and has the best life on the outside no one really knows what's going on, on the inside.

The conflict within the story is between the producers, Arden, and herself. Arden is trying out for a reality tv show that could really launch her career. The producers want her to present a more idealized and polished version of her self really focusing on a narrative that fits the shows image. A picture perfect story that will really sell the views, very far from what Arden has. She is forced to push away her struggles at home, like her parents leaving her, her financial issues, and losing her best friend. Arden will have to bend and twist the truth about her home life so she can get the part she really wants. Now Arden is struggling with her own feelings whether to hide her struggles at home or stay true to her self and tell the producers what really is going on. It's showing her issue with her identity and how much she is willing to sacrifice to fit in. For example, "This role, Arden. I'm looking for someone more...small-town. More genuine. More homegrown, less Hollywood." (Page 44) Arden has a difficult decision to make whether that's being real and staying true to herself or changing who she is for a chance at fame.

The author prorated Arden as a troubled, self-absorbed party girl with no connections to her family or childhood friends, especially after her career took off. She hasn’t spoken to anyone from her past in years, and her personality reflects her neglect of meaningful relationships. When she returns home, Arden expects everything to be as it was, including her best friend Caroline acting like nothing has changed. However, she soon realizes that Caroline, along with others, is deeply affected by her absence. Arden doesn’t seem to care about the past, but everyone else has been really hurt by her leaving. As she starts to reflect, she recognizes how much she has changed and that she needs to become a better person. The turning point happens when Arden realizes she owes Caroline an apology. For example, "That's when I realize there's one thing I owe her. One thing I've owed her for a very long time. An apology." (Page 63) This marks a turning point for Arden as she's no longer willing to run away from her mistakes. Unlike her old self, who would have returned to Hollywood, she’s now committed to rebuilding those relationships and becoming a better version of herself in general.

The conflict within the story is Caroline vs. her emotions, an internal conflict. Since Arden has came back to town Caroline agreed to fake date her so Caroline can have her writing in an article that Arden has agreed to help with considered her connections she has to the famous world, this will help Caroline get into a better college. Caroline had a perfect life going, she was doing great in school going out with the prettiest cheerleader and now Arden has swooped in and made Carolines life a lot harder. Caroline tells herself that she won't let Arden back into her life but she is having a very difficult time doing that. Caroline is worried that her feelings might start getting stronger for Arden and it will be even harder than 4 years ago when she left to leave this time. Caroline is worried that it might be even more than friendship and that she would mess things up with her dream girl. Everything Arden does reminds Caroline constantly of the past and makes Caroline keep going deeper and deeper into her head of these crazy emotions. What if Caroline has an actual crush on Arden? I would say that would ruin their friendship but Caroline has made it pretty clear they aren't friends. I wonder how this will all end up playing out do you think Caroline would confess to Arden? Here is an example of Arden making Carolines go crazy, "And I hate that my heart begins to race just a little bit faster. Hate how much I missed her. I haven't done anything like that, felt anything like that, since she left." (Page 88) In this quote, Caroline feels conflicted. She "hates" how her heart races when thinking about Arden, showing her frustration that she still misses her a lot. Despite wanting to move on, Caroline can't deny the strong emotions she has, revealing the pain of how long Arden has been gone for.

The author portrays Arden as someone who is really closed-minded, cocky, and not very honest. As the story goes on, though, Arden's perspective changes a lot, and she starts to see things differently. When she comes back to her hometown and reconnects with old friends, she realizes how much she's missed and finds comfort in the normal life she once had. By the time her days in Barnwich are winding down, Arden doesn’t want things to change. She sees that the people around her truly care about her, and she feels like a better person when she’s with them. At her party in LA, though, she takes it all in and realizes she doesn't actually love it there. When Arden talks to Bianchi, she opens up to him, telling him the truth about everything—how she’s not really dating Caroline, how she's not a small-town girl, and how she’s kind of been a terrible person. Towards the end of the story, Caroline has to choose between her dream role in Hollywood or staying home with the people who actually care about her, including her grandma and the love of her life. When Arden opens up to Bianchi, he appreciates her honesty and admits he’s known the whole time. For example, "You know, he says, I like you a hell of a lot more when you are being honest. Your audition was damn good, but this... this was better."(Page 288) By being honest and showing who she truly is, Arden becomes the person she used to be and gets the chance to pursue her dream. Bianchi is so impressed that he lets her move back to Barnwich! So, in the end, Arden goes back to her family, friends, and Caroline, and gets to play her dream role because she finally spoke her truth. Now Caroline and Arden are together what will Caroline do about Taylor? Will they stay together forever? Who knows how there story will play out!
