IXL is a personalized learning app I have the students at my day care use daily. Students pay use this app to focus on building foundational skills in language arts and math. What I love most about IXL is that it first assesses the child then it recommends skill builders based on the child’s areas of weakness. As a teacher, you can make your own recommendations for your students as well, and it will show up on their end. The app breaks down language arts from pre-school to 12th grade and then further breaks down concepts for each grade. The skill builders are also broken down in a coherent and logical manner.

Epic is another great technological tool and app my day care students use daily. The world of Epic does an excellent job of intriguing students with its plethora of book choices. I especially love this app because it also has a read-aloud option which helps my struggling readers. I believe that when students are read to and hear how other’s express the words they read, they gain skills needed to master phonemic awareness and reading those big words on their own. I think that this app is also great for elementary aged school children and auditorial as well as visual learners.

I think that as a teacher, it is important we add intervention centers into our weekly schedules, instead of leaving it all up to specialist and interventionists. That said, it is important I find solid ideas for helping my students master phonemic awareness. After reviewing this reading rockets lesson, I felt excited to find new ways to help students master short vowels and read whole words. I believe this specific lesson is perfect for 1st grade students and can benefit both the visual and auditorial learner.

The site is run by Harvard University and lays out the key concepts of the fundamentals of child development: brain architecture, serve and return, toxic stress, executive function and self-regulation, and resilience. The home page graphics lead to separate videos and resources about the 5 core building blocks of child development. After spending time navigating the different areas of the site, I found useful information about child development that I want to consider when lesson planning. For this reason, I've decided to link this into my tool kit. I believe this site will help me better understand how to motivate and support my students while catering to their emotional needs, such as, safety and inclusion. Then, after I've established a positive relationships with my class, my students will feel confident enough in themselves to tackle difficult phonemic awareness challenges.

On this site, one can find 12 activities to promote mind development and thinking in young scholars. While the activities may seem like mere child’s play, the activities can be used to create some exciting learning games to help master phonemic awareness. For example, one of the listed activities is blocks, which, with a little creativity, can be used to master breaking down words into their smallest units of sound. During a center's activity, a teacher can use masking tape to break words down and scramble them on blocks, and then have the student rebuild them. I believe this link will serve my grade range appropriately.

I love the idea of sound walls and believe it will help my students conquer those tricky high frequency words! Sound walls are organized by speech sounds, are from the students POV, focus on phonemes and articulation, independent, and focus on transfer of skills to multiple words. I think word walls are awesome, but sound walls help students recognize how their mouths feel and look when producing sounds, which in turn helps them connect speech to print.

In my previous ITL class I took a deeper dive into assessments and their importance in the classroom. As a student, I thought assessments were scary, unfair, and an isolating experience. I believed they were made to make less academic students feel inferior so I hated them. However, as an aspiring teacher, I recognize their importance in the classroom and how to alleviate the fear associated with them. I will definitely be using assessments in my future classrooms and think phonemic awareness assessments will be an especially important tool for me. Using assessments, I can better get to know my students and, in turn, create a better relationship with them because I’ll be better able to help. Phonemic awareness assessments can be created in a way to support every type of learner. As a teacher I can create or find multiple assessments to help my students best express their knowledge.

Word families charts benefit both students who are mastering and have yet to master phonemic awareness. For students who have yet to master phonemic awareness they serve aanchor charts for remebering their word families. For students who have mastered phonemic awareness, teachers can have them recreate the family charts from memory. This activity serves many types of learners and can be hands-on art project or a simple list-making activity.

I decided to link this article because, at times, I get lost in the difference between phonological and phonemic awareness, and this page illustrates the differences and connections between the two. The page also provides access to various video series that capture what both these concepts look like in the classroom. I know this site will benefit me as a teacher because I am a visual learner, and get much more out of watching educators teach, then I do trying to visualize the theories they are using. I believe that the more digging I do on teaching phonemic awareness, the more I'll be able to differentiate and individualize instruction for my students. I can save this site and reference it in the future to support my students during their literacy quest. This page is appropriate for elementary school teaching strategies, as well as middle school students.

His music is research-based, and teacher approved to help students conquer early childhood national and state standards. His songs range from simple ABCs ones to more complex ones about vowel teams, phonemes, and common endings. On top of being educational, his videos are also physical! His songs teach students important content all while getting them a chance to dance or exercise. I believe his music channel will engage the visual and kinesthetic learners

When I think about my strengths as an educator, one of the first things that comes to mind is my ability to connect with students and participate in positive relationship building with each student. Due to my interpersonal skills, I've been able to motivate kids into taking ownership of their learning, and loving it. I use to think it was the fun, garden lessons that excited them, but then I realized a lot of it had to do with how much I wanted to empower them during lessons. I did this by adding choices into many parts of my lessons. I had ideas about what I we could do, but I would ultimately let them run with it. I am a big believer of trusting your students and creating a bond that inspires them to want to learn by giving them choices everyday. I think this article is a great resource for teachers to use when lesson planning so that hard literacy or phonemic awareness concepts become less scary and more fun because of autonomy and choice!
