Beauty Standards in Social Media

Social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok frequently promote unrealistic beauty standards through digitally altered images, well-lit videos, and face filters. These idealized representations can distort perceptions of how people truly look, leading to negative impacts on collective self-esteem. Despite the seemingly harmless act of scrolling through these platforms, individuals absorb and internalize these images, contributing to feelings of inadequacy. To address this issue, it's important to acknowledge the prevalence of unrealistic beauty standards on social media and take steps to counteract their influence, such as promoting authenticity and diversity in the content we consume and creating a healthier online environment that fosters self-acceptance and body positivity. The impact of social media on our self-esteem is more about how we use it rather than the platforms themselves. It's crucial to be mindful of our social media usage and encourage young people to do the same. Recognizing and avoiding toxic beauty advice is a key initial step in combating any negative effects social media may have on ourselves or our loved ones.To address the influence of social media on body image, start by educating yourself on its impact. Next, take proactive steps to clean up your feed by unfollowing accounts and posts that promote unrealistic beauty standards. Even if unsure, err on the side of caution and unfollow anything that negatively affects your self-esteem. Consider using the mute button for friends' posts that trigger negative feelings about yourself or your appearance, prioritizing your well-being over engagement. While unrealistic beauty standards are prevalent on social media, it's essential to remember that diverse and empowering content exists too. Seek out accounts that celebrate body image diversity and champion women. Engage with posts and people who share your interests and hobbies, whether it's pottery or stand-up comedy. By curating your feed with uplifting and affirming content, you can boost your self-esteem and find inspiration in a supportive online community.

How do Beauty Standards Affect our Mental Health?

For how we decide to view our own bodies, we percieve them aswell, both visually and mentally. How we feel in our bodies directly impacts how we treat our body. If we treat our body badly it will affect us both physically and mentally. Our body image is a combination of a person's percieved and ideal body image. There are different lengths in which we see our bodies, the more realistic body image we have, the most likely it is for us to be happy and healthy. However, there are some cases in which people see themselves unrealistically and no matter how much diet or plastic surgery they get, they will never reach that unrealistic standard they want.

Body image is affected by many aspects which can be environmental, social, or temperament. These are thoughts and feelings about how they look at themselves, and how they think people percieve them. These are the four aspects of body image:

Perceived body image: Perceived body image refers to how you personally interpret the way you look. This is entirely subjective.

Affective body image: Affective body language refers to how you feel about your body. Such feelings may include anger, disgust, dissatisfaction, happiness, pride, and more. You may have different feelings about different parts of your body.

Cognitive body image: Cognitive body image refers to how you think about your body image. This can refer to “thinking” you are fat or “thinking” you don’t look attractive enough.

Behavioral body image: Behavioral body image refers to the behaviors you engage in due to your body image. For example, someone might undergo a cosmetic procedure to change their appearance.

A positive body image is important because it defines how we feel about ourselves. It is a factor that determines our confidence and the way we manage our daily relationships. When we focus on other determinats of our lives, our body becomes a less focal point for our mind. Wanting to look good is not bad, but what we really should focus on is farther more than our appeareance. When we feel confident it sticks to us, not only physically but it becomes a part of ourselves, whhat we are and what we do, and helps us with our relationships, hobbies, desires, and even professional ventures.

Beauty and Eating Disorders

Beauty standards frequently encourage a restricted and unrealistic definition of appearance, promoting thinness, muscularity, or specific physical characteristics. When people are forced to conform to these ideals, they may engage in unhealthy behaviors such as extreme dieting, excessive exercise, or disordered eating patterns in order to obtain the desired appearance. Constant exposure to images of idealized bodies in the media may increase feelings of inferiority and dissatisfaction with one's own looks. Epidemiological studies have shown that the quantity of eating disorders among adolescent girls has increased over the last 50 years. This can result in body dissatisfaction and a mistaken impression of one's physique, eventually leading to the development of eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or binge-eating disorder. It is critical to prioritize mental and physical health over societal expectations.

Additionally, the pressure to meet unrealistic expectations of beauty can have a negative effect on people's mental health by increasing depressive, anxious, and unworthy sentiments. Frequent comparing ourselves with perfect pictures might damage one's sense of value and lead to a negative body image. The stigma associated with eating disorders and mental health problems may discourage people from getting treatment, which would only increase their suffering. It is critical that society acknowledges the negative impacts of maintaining realistic views of beauty and seeks to promote variety, acceptance, and self-love.
