David Ricardo nació en Londres en el año 1772. Formaba parte de una familia sefardí que provenía de Portugal. Su familia fue numerosa, siendo el tercero de diecisiete hijos. Dejo la escuela y empezó a trabajar con 14 años en una agencia de corretaje. Con 21 años, en el año 1793, se caso sin seguir el ritual judío y abrazo la fe del cuaquerismo, lo cual significo un alejamiento de su familia.
