Coming of age moment

For our narrator, the moment of "coming of age" occurs when her father proceeds to using physical violence against her brother. Before that, she expressed a lot of admiration for her father, with which she shared a strong relationship. She saw no flaws in him because she was presumably too young to see them. She loved him unconditionally, and closely followed him in every step that he took. However, when she witnessed the beating of her brother by her father, she realized that she did not want to follow each of her father's steps. Soon, she was aware that her father wasn't perfect and started to show less admiration for him, and that's where she experienced the "coming of age moment".

"Some nights the rice was a mushy gruel. I was worried that I could not do a simple task right. "Sorry" I would say to the table, my voice soft and embarrassed. In answer, my father would keep eating, pushing the rice into his mouth as if he never expected anything different, as if he noticed no difference between what he did so well and I did so poorly. He would eat every last mouthful, his chopsticks walking quickly across the plate. Then he would rise, whistling, and clear the table...I would be convinced by him that all was well in the world."

Characterization:

"My father sniffed. "I can do that," he said. "You don't have to

be a genius to do that." He placed a sprig of green onion in water and showed me how it bloomed like a flower. "I know many tricks like this," he said. "Much more than Yan." This quote explains that the father is a very competitive person and like's to be better then everybody else. Another part of the short story that explains that the father knows he's better then everyone else is when the narrator makes rice and knows that it's not as good as her fathers, the father reacted as if it wasn't a shock that his was better and she had failed.
