The LC is an effective way to give each lesson structure and ensure that both learners and support staff are aware of the aims for the lesson. The support staff can, if necessary for the individual learner, then let the learner know how the lesson will proceed and guide them through it, providing a sense of safety and purpose in their learning.

the Learning Cycle

The learning cycle is utilised in the efficient delivery of lessons to students.

The first crucial step is to connect and check. This is for staff and students to recognise and understand the students current/prior knowledge from previous sessions. This is a crucial step in the delivery of lessons, as without an assessment of the comprehension

of the students, there will be an uncertainty around the students ability to complete future tasks.

The second step in the learning cycle is to share. This gives the students an expectation of what is to come in a lesson and what is expected to be achieved by the end of said lesson.

step three is to present. New skills and knowledge will be presented in a stimulating and engaging manner.

Students will contribute when prompted and new information and skills are discussed.

The forth step in the learning cycle is to apply. This is where the students will use what they have newly discovered and apply it to the new set tasks, demonstrating their understanding to themselves and others.

The final step is to recall and review. This solidifies the new knowledge gained and reminds the students of what has been achieved over the lesson.

Overall, the learning cycle maintains lesson structure, learning goals, achievements and support.

The Learning Cycle is a wonderful aid in being able to see how best to support students through Connect and Check, Share, Present, Apply, and Recall and Review. It's a full cycle that can be repeated to create better results each time that helps the students grow. By knowing what step a student is on we don't have to guess what comes next in their progression and our method of support.
