The cooking moments that are most fulfilling to me are when someone has a physical reaction to my food like eyes rolling back into their head, when I believe that a dish looks attractive and appetizing and when I get surprised by the products that I produce like when a sauce is surprisingly tasteful when I'm not expecting it.

My first soft skill is that I am very goal driven. I like to set small goals throughout the day and it helps me focus on the bigger picture. My second soft skills is that I can be a very good leader if I know in particular what needs to be done and if others aren't on task then I can get them on task. My third soft skill is my work ethic. If I know that things need to get done and they are important then I can focus hard on those tasks.

What does success look like

Success to me means that at its bear minimum everything that needs to be done is done and done on time and then after that it is a matter of priorities. After everything that needs to be done is done then you can move on to optional activities such as prepping for the next day. If you can end your day saying you did everything that needed to be done then I'd count that as success.

Food Journalist

Food journalists are people who will travel around from restaurant to restaurant or even from continent to continent to try, test and critic food. They may be hired under an umbrella magazine or will be independent with their own blogs and websites. I think I would really enjoy this career because I do love eating food, traveling and tasting new flavors as well as criticizing food. Journalism was another road I wanted to go down but I chosen the culinary industry so this would be a way for those two careers to intersect. Like many positions in the food industry you don't need to be formally trained however having a degree in journalism can help your articles be found easier and can help with job hunting. Also having training within the food industry can help in your understanding of food techniques as well as general information on the industry. Magazines like Food and Travel can be helpful ways for food journalists to promote their content however with the rise of Youtube, Tiktok and Instagram and the younger generations pulling back from traditional news sources these websites can also be routes you can go down. Anthony Bourdain was a famous chef and food journalist who died in 2018.

Test Kitchens are company's or organizations dedicated to the testing of food. These kitchens will often have state of the art equipment and will test new cooking techniques and new cooking science. These will often be tied to larger organizations such as Crisco having their own test kitchen during the great depression to find shelf stable recipes that used Crisco when fresh ingredients were hard to find. I think I would enjoy this job because I find some of the science associated with cooking to be fascinating. Most test kitchens will require a certain amount of formal training weather in science or culinary however a lot of their jobs are just trying different cooking techniques so it might not be completely necessary. B. Dylan Hollis is creator on Tiktok who tests out old recipes from the 20th century and shows which recipes actually work and which don't. This is an example on how the average person can start experimenting at home and how they can use non-traditional media that isn't linked to a pre-established organization.

Caterers

Caterers are cooks/chefs would work for company's that host parties or deliver food. Caterers often deal with very large quantities of customers such as weddings. When dealing with such a large quantity of customers it is often more efficient and cost friendly to have a set number of food items and have everyone choose from that menu. This gives the caterer the information on how many of one ingredient they will need and how to plan out their cooking times. I believe this career would be suited to me because of my goal driven nature. If I know exactly how many steaks and exactly how many chicken breasts I need to cook then I can set goals for myself on how to cook them which would be very easy for me. Like many positions in the food industry you don't have to be formally trained. However having the appropriate licenses and training in marketing would be a great help. Websites like eventactive.com help customers find verified caterers so you know you are getting a quality service however with websites like Kijiji and Indeed many caterers can be self employed. Subway offers a catering service for large parties which offers sandwich and cookie platers.

Private Chef

The first career I would be interested in would be a private chef. Private chefs are chefs who are hired by private individuals such as a family on a yacht cruise or a private chef for a hotel room. Like many positions in the food industry there aren't many true qualifications required to be a private chef. You don't have to be formally trained as a cook or in hospitality however having the appropriate food and safety licenses as well as liquor licenses would be beneficial. Also as many private chefs will be self hiring having training in marketing and hospitality would be beneficial. I believe this job would suit me as only having a set amount of customers every night would allow me to focus more on creative dishes with exotic ingredients. Also the knowledge that you will never have any less customers would be reassuring. There are many umbrella corporations that host and cater private chefs such as takeachef.com which checks chefs qualifications so you are getting the best quality service however with websites like Kijiji and Indeed you can be your own employer and work for private citizens. Chef Kyle Billman is a professionally trained chef who works privately through takeachef.com
