This course has dramatically changed how I think about music. I found it incredibly interesting to learn about the different eras of music as well as how music evolved differently in different geographic locations. Learning about these differentiations has caused me to think more about what is going on in music as I listen to it; what was going on in the time period it was written, where is the artist from, what instruments are most evident, etc. I also found the structure of specific pieces to be interesting as I had not previously known anything about the composition of music. Now, noticing how and when structures vary, I feel myself being much more engaged in music and connecting to it much more.

-KM

This course has enlightened me and changed the way I think about music. When I was younger I participated in chorus and briefly played some instruments. I always felt that music was something that you had to actively engage in to enjoy. After learning about the origin of music and how many different eras it has been a part of, I've come to understand that music has been a part of our lives for longer than I thought. Not only that but, it can be passively part of your life and you can still enjoy it. It has a way of bringing people together, but it can also tend to define you. Ultimately though I believe the power of music in bringing cultures together, is much like that of cuisine. There is a fundamentally likable and all encompassing feeling that comes about when we hear music. We are drawn to it because of its power to uplift and motivate in my opinion.

-JL

My view on music has hugely changed after taking this course. I am now fully aware of what all music from different cultures and regions all over the world consists of. It was very fascinating to learn that music has all the same elements no matter what the tune may be. Please allow me to reflect on some essential information that I found helpful and worth learning, and appreciative of. Of course the entire course was marvelous and I would like to tell everyone how much I learned, but it would be more like a book and I don't want to do that. I have decided to choose three key points to work with. To begin I was enlightened by the different elements to list a few: Sound, rhythm, and melody. In saying that I will now attend a concert or music selection and think about the type of sound that is being performed. How the rhythm is expressed through the words, and how the melody takes on the mood of the song selection. Next I was impressed with the middle ages chapter and how early the start of music begin (450 - 1450) ear it was a nice history that was illustrated. Finally my last key point would be the Rock section. I was extremely excited to learn that r&b and rap music derived all from rock which I was not aware of during the start of this course. In closing, I just want to say that this Intro. to Music class has given me everything I wanted and needed to deepen my understanding of all music not just some music. I really enjoyed this online course and would totally recommend it to anyone who is beginning to appreciate music in many different ways.

~TM

This course has greatly changed my overall view on music and all that it entails. I found it very interesting to learn about the differences in musical aspects in cultures and regions throughout the world. I was also intrigued to discover the evolution of music as time progressed, along with the success and accomplishments of musical artists within these eras. Most importantly, I have come to understand and appreciate the impact music has had on individuals and cultures throughout the years. Music has brought joy, hope, and happiness to the lives of people around the world, and has also served as a wonderful way in bringing communities, cultures, and families together.

Before I started this course I had a very basic understanding of music and music history from school. I never thought to delve deeper into the subject even though, like most people, I listened to and enjoyed music every day. After completing the coursework I can confidently say that I have vastly increased my knowledge of music history, how music is composed, and the different elements that go into musical pieces. After listening and analyzing the to all the music from the course, I now find myself thinking about the music I listen to daily and try to identify it's components individually. It has changed the way I listen to music. Also, the exposure from this course has made motivated to try to finally learn an instrument myself. I've been having so much fun learning music for my new ukulele though it is frustrating and challenging sometimes. I am very happy to have taken this course because it inspired my own personal musical adventure!
- NL

After going through this class I learned much more. I learned about the different cultures and what music means to them. I also learned about how music started in each of these cultures and how important it is to them. I also learned about multiple new instruments that I had never heard of before taking this course. This course made me think about music in a new way. It made me think about music as stories and not just songs. This is especially true in the older songs, they would sing them to tell a story. After taking this course I feel I should open up my variety of music and give other genres a chance.

-SR

This course has encouraged me to be open-minded to other genres of music. Most of the time I have just listened to the genres I like. I realized that I actually have little knowledge or awareness of so many different types of music. It is easy to stay comfortable listening to what I have always listened to, and this class has really challenged me to broaden my music interests. I especially like the historical information on each genre in the chapters. It was very interesting to see how music played, and continues to play, so an integrated role in society, government, spirituality, and culture. I am very happy I took this course.

I have taken a relatively similar class like this before and both times I have learned something different about music in the old days and music now. it's interesting to see where music generated from and how instruments became popular. In my opinion, I also loved to learn about concerts in the olden days with music because they are so common today. Musicians go on tour so often and people are always paying to go see their favorite artist or band. I hope that music will continue to grow in a more positive way rather than some of the lyrics in some rap and hip hop songs today. I think sometimes we can get wrapped up in the wrong music and people don't realize how much it actually affects our daily lives. i think that's all i really have to say. I really enjoyed this course and the way it was structured online.

Prior to taking this music course I had no understanding of the history behind it. One main thing I gathered from this course is that music is a powerful thing. It evokes feelings and has the power to bring people together. Music is also a way for people to express themselves and share ideas, whether through poetic lyrics or throbbing anthems. But today, artists are not known for their music, but for how extravagant their outfits are and how many times their wealthy relatives can get them out of jail. And thus, music is lost.

-JB

My view on music has changed a little since taking this course. I have a better understanding on where our music came from and how it has evolved throughout history. Before this class I really didn't enjoy listening to any kind of classical music but I think now that I have a better understanding about some of the meaning behind it I will have more of an interest in listening to it when I comes on rather than just changing the station. I feel like now I can listen to a piece and hear the different instruments and tones and really appreciate what the artist was trying to accomplish.

-RB

My outlook on music has changed drastically. I love music, I personally believe that I have the gift of song. However, I have never looked into the history and major events that have shaped it. It was great to learn everything from the very beginning and watch the changes and growth. I never knew that The Beatles had such a great impact on music. I also enjoyed learning about other cultures and how music shaped their societies.

-RJ

My view on music has definitely changed while taking this course. Not drastically but it has changed. I never really assessed all the history involved with the music I currently listen to today. I find it very interesting to think that without something like, Classical music some of the genres we have today would probably have not existed or progressed as well as it has.
