HABs have long been a problem to Alaskan tribes. They occur when plankton species respond to good sunlight and nutrient conditions by multiplying at a rapid rate. As a result, marine life that feeds on it, such as clams and scallops, become contaminated with the toxins. Human consumption of these animals will then to sickness and death due to the harmful toxins.

In order to find ways to get rid of HABs, Alaska has to find ways to assess the beaches and shellfish where marine life consumes them. Around 17 tribal nations have joined the partnership that the Southeast Alaska Tribal Toxins(organization) has created to increase testing for toxins in animals. Workshops have also been organized by the SEATT for tribes to learn how to use nets, identification tools, and filtering apparatus.

One question I still have about the case study is how the clams can mutate over time. The algae have been in Alaska for a long time, and with people attempting to combat the issue, is it possible for the algae blooms to increase in growth, especially with climate change continuing to take over the environment over the years.
