You can also change a few things, or else people who have watched the movie won't want to read the book, or vice versa. You could add your own twist to it but the majority of the storyline needs to fit the story. You shouldn't change someting like who is the antagonist, but adding some minor changes would make the movie/play interesting and more enjoyable.
