A wonderful evening enjoyed with my friend under simulation exercise. Our activity was identifying the vegetables from fruits kept in a plate and slicing it for making curry. There were apples, bananas, and carrots mixed and kept in a plate.

I asked my friend who wore a blindfold to pick the vegetables from the plate and try to identify which vegetable was it. She touched and felt every vegetable and fruit and picked vegetables only. I gave her time to identify what vegetable it was. She identified correctly. Also, tried and attempted to cut it to make the curry. She was nervous, so she cut it into large pieces, and we ate it raw.

Kitchen skills, especially identifying and cutting fruits and vegetables and learning knife skills is very important for someone who is blind. We tried identifying vegetables from fruits and attempted learning knife skills. The consumer independently identified the vegetables. I assisted her with cutting it.

We discussed together which life skill mainly a blind consumer should be learned must and lead to his/her independence. I let her identify the fruits and vegetables and feel the textures. Where she needed support, I was there to assure her that I was there to look after her safety and give instructions on how to handle knife and the cutting process and successfully completing it. In such a way, I was there “With Her and not For’ in learning and mastering the skill.
