I chose Helena because her emotional journey is one of the most relatable and human in the play. She deals with unrequited love, insecurity, and confusion, but still shows loyalty, honesty, and a deep longing to be loved. Her struggle and growth stand out among the characters.

Her desperation leads her to betray Hermia’s secret and follow Demetrius into the forest, hoping to win his affection. In the woods (Act 2 & 3), she is confused and hurt when both Lysander and Demetrius suddenly claim to love her, thinking they’re mocking her. Helena feels humiliated and betrayed, especially by her friend Hermia, whom she accuses of joining the joke. Her emotions swing between love, anger, jealousy, and sadness. However, despite everything, she remains honest and vulnerable. In Acts 4 and 5, after the spell is removed from Lysander, Demetrius still loves Helena due to the fairy magic, and she accepts his love.

Helena’s main conflict—her unreturned love—is resolved, but only through magic. Demetrius’s love is not natural, which makes us question whether her conflict is truly resolved or just magically covered up. Helena never questions this change, which shows her desire for love may outweigh her need for truth. So, her emotional pain is eased, but not in a realistic or honest way.

By the end of the play, Helena gets her happy ending—Demetrius loves her, and they are married. She is no longer rejected or alone. However, for the audience, the happiness feels a bit uneasy because his love is still under the influence of magic. Still, Helena appears content, and the play ends on a joyful, celebratory note for all the couples, including her. Her dream of being loved is fulfilled, even if it's through magical means.

The ending of A Midsummer Night’s Dream restores order and harmony: the lovers are happily paired, Theseus marries Hippolyta, and the fairies bless the unions. The play’s comic tone peaks with the humorous Pyramus and Thisbeperformance. Puck’s final speech blurs the line between dream and reality, suggesting the whole play might have been a dream. Shakespeare uses this to highlight themes of love, illusion, and the transformative power of imagination.
