I think iCivics is a great site for social studies. They have lesson ideas for all grades and even a few games for students to play.

I think the app we used to create the storyboards would be a unique way to tell a story of like "Louis and Clark Expedition" became to be. It would be visually entertaining.

I think that embedding videos in a lesson would be great. You could also use the many quizes we have seen to make sure the students understand the information.

Megan, this is the matching game I used to help my students learn vocabulary for lesson 1 and 2. They really loved these games and they played all of them for the whole class period.

There are so many neat and interesting stories of people and places that really happened. I like listening to The Disappearing Spoon podcast about stories in chemistry history. You could make your own podcasts for your class too.

So for me I utilize Google Earth, a variety of archeological tools are online that offer virtual tours of dig sites, and I have done some of the assignments from this class as an ice breaker for the new content.

We recently wrapped up Ancient Greece and one of the assignments we had to do in this class was the animation story telling tool. I created several mythological characters and the key characters from the content we covered and recorded myself voice acting for these guys (because what 11-year-old doesn't love a good voice actor) and had them browse through them and then they took a quiz over each person they looked at.

I think there are several ways that technology can be implemented in a Social Studies class. One way is to use the website Story Jumper. You could create a timeline using a book, and you could shorten some of the more important information in a way the students could understand and remember easier. I always understood the lesson better when the teacher didn't read straight from the textbook and worded it in their own way! (which is something you can do in the book)
