When I was in preschool, my Aunt Mary introduced me to the first song I remember listening to. The song was "Red High Heels" by Kellie Pickler. This song impacted me in a positive way. It brought me closer to my Aunt Mary, and it made me feel like I was on top of the world. Since I had loved this song so much, my aunt once took me to a garage sale and bought me red high heels, even though they were way too big on me. This impacted my current literacy practices by feeling the need to connect texts I consume to real life situations, like how my aunt bought me red high heels because of the song. This will affect me as a literacy teacher by striving to connect real life situations to the texts I present to my students.

It was "Fun Friday" in my kindergarten class. My teacher instructed my class and I to go to the rug with ABCs on it. She introduced us to a song called "Tooty Ta" by Dr. Jean Feldman. The song contained directions to a dance. Some of these directions included: "thumbs up, elbows back, feet apart, knees together." Through the whole song, it adds more directions to the dance. This impacted me in a great way because it was something that made me laugh because it was such a goofy dance. During this time of my life, I was in need of a good laugh because my mom was ill. This impacts my current literacy practices because I often find myself listening to music that I can move around to. It could be dancing, doing laundry, cleaning, or driving. This impacts the way I will teach literacy by ensuring that the auditory text I am using for lessons is not boring for students and keeps them engaged. This could be choosing an interesting story or upbeat music to play while students work or clean.

In 2011, I was listening to a pop station on Pandora on my iPod touch when I discovered "Born This Way" by Lady Gaga. This song was a great message for me to hear since I had began developing into an adolescent and the whole song is about being proud of who you are even if you do not fit society's norms. This impacts my current literacy practices by not judging my literacy choices. This will impact the work I will do as a literacy teacher by ensuring that I do not judge students' literacy choices, even if the text may be a bit difficult for them.

It was my routine in fifth grade. Get home from school, get my iPod touch, put in my earbuds, and listen to music on Pandora. On one of those days after school, I discovered the song "What Makes You Beautiful" by One Direction. I remember feeling so excited listening to this song because everyone at school that day had been talking about a new boy band. This song had such a positive impact on me because the message of the song is about a guy thinking a girl is beautiful despite the fact that she is insecure, and at the time I was struggling with acne and feeling insecure about it. This impacts my current literacy practices by turning insecurity into motivation to try. It allows me to be content with making mistakes and to not always be perfect with literacy. This will impact my practices as a literacy teacher by making room for literacy mistakes in my classroom because students learn more from mistakes.

It was summer 2013, and I was jumping off the diving boards at the pool where my dad is the head manager. I remember hearing the song, "Cruise" by Florida Georgia Line, and thinking to myself that it was a good song. It was almost addicting to listen to. I went up to the concessions stand where the music was being played from and asked the worker to play it again because I loved it so much. This had such an amazing impact on me because it is an upbeat song that reminds me of good times in the summer. This impacts my current literacy practices because I find myself liking more upbeat songs than slower songs. This will impact my practices as a literacy teacher by ensuring that I will strive to make the consumption of literacy as positive and upbeat as possible for my students. I want to do this for my students so that they can look back and remember good times with past their literacy experiences.

In seventh grade, I dealt with a lot of drama. Taylor Swift dropped a new song at the most perfect time for me. She released "Shake It Off," which is about not paying too much attention to your haters and doing what makes you happy. This song motivated me to be more confident in myself amidst all the drama I had found myself wrapped up in at school. This impacts my current literacy practices by shrugging off literacy mistakes and trying again instead of being hard on myself. This will influence my practices as a literacy teacher by urging my students to shake off literacy mistakes and try again when they are ready.

My grandparents bought me Taylor Swift's album Fearless so I could listen to music on my radio and CD player. My mom showed me how to put a CD in the player, and I put it in by myself. The first song to play on this album was "Fearless." This song made me realize that maybe I should not be so anxious about things. This impacts my current literacy practices by not always listening to what my teachers told me in early childhood. They often would doubt my abilities or completely dismiss my problems. The meaning of "Fearless" by Taylor Swift can be applied to my current literacy practices by telling myself that I know what I am capable of and I know how to help myself even if I am struggling with a text. This impacts how I will be as a literacy teacher by knowing how not to treat my students as they are learning to read. I know I need to motivate my students and build up their confidence in their literacy skills, not doubt them or dismiss their struggles.

My grandparents bought me another Taylor Swift album again since I had become obsessed with her music. When I got the Speak Now CD, I wanted to introduce my younger sisters to it. I put the CD in the player in our playroom, and we all listened to it together. We had so much fun listening to it together. We danced and sang together. The song I remember my sisters and I choreographing a dramatic dance to was "Haunted." Listening to Speak Now with my sisters had a very positive impact on me since it brought me closer to them and enabled me to build stronger relationships with them. This influences my current literacy practices by urging me to make literacy social. Often times, I find myself wanting to work on reading assignments I have collaboratively. This impacts my current literacy practices because I always try to participate in literacy activities that are fun or make me happy. It is an upbeat song that makes the future seem bright and full of hope, which is what I was experiencing at the time. This influences my current literacy practices because of how I choose texts.

The meaning of this song did not really have an impact on me. It was when I would listen to it and who I was with that impacted me. I had just gotten my driver's license, and one of my new favorite pastimes became driving around my hometown. Most of the time, I would take one of my younger sisters Myah with me. I somehow discovered the song "Damage" by PARTYNEXTDOOR and Halsey on Spotify, and Myah and I fell in love with it. This song brought Myah and I even closer to each other because while we were on these drives listening to mainly this song, we would talk about our problems. The message of this song was so powerful that it helped me get through this breakup and many other painful life events down the road. I was planning on doing what I did over the summer, except replacing work with school. Then, I met a guy in my history class that changed my plans. We had been talking over the summer because we knew we had a class together, but neither one of us was expecting to start a relationship with each other. Once we got comfortable with each other, I showed him this song that I found on TikTok. I showed him this song because it describes how I feel about him. This song made our relationship blossom. This impacts my current literacy practices by causing me to feel the urge to share new literacy I find with others. Every day, I find myself sending songs, Tweets, motivational Instagram posts, and TikToks to my friends and family.

At the beginning of January, my family and I had COVID. We had a lot of free time, so my sisters and I watched many movies together. One of the movies Myah, Avah, and I watched together was Encanto. Since it is a Disney movie, it is full of various songs. One of the songs featured on the movie is called "Surface Pressure" by Jessica Darrow. In the movie, the main character's older sister Luisa sings about stressful it is being the oldest daughter. This song helped me feel less alone with all the anxiety I dealt with and continue to deal with being the oldest daughter. This influences my current literacy practices since I continue to listen this song a lot since it resonates with me so strongly. This will impact the work I will do when I teach literacy by being able to think back to the feelings and thoughts I had as a child. Having the ability to do this will allow me to understand why a student may be misbehaving or not participating in class.

After life was easy for a while in 2020, it shifted because of the pandemic. I had a lot of free time on my hands, so I was spending a lot of time with my family. One night, I was up super late talking with my dad about life. He started showing me bands he saw in concert when he was in high school and college, one of them being AC/DC. We listened to "It's a Long Way to the Top (If you Wanna Rock 'N' Roll)." I had already heard this song before, but listening to this song with my dad brought us closer together. This influences my current literacy practices because I often have the urge to experience literacy with people I care about. This will impact my practices as a literacy teacher by giving me the idea to assign literacy activities for my students to engage in with their families.

Winter 2019

This song defined the winter of my senior year of high school. My sisters were freshmen, so I would drive them to school in the mornings. We would get there early so I could get a good parking spot, and Myah would always want to go into the school right away. Avah, (my other sister,) always wanted to stay in the car with me for a bit longer. We would listen to this song because we just loved it so much. For some reason, "Blinding Lights" by The Weeknd made those cold mornings worth it. This impacts my current literacy practices by choosing texts that fit the vibes of the current environment I am in. For example, when I am with a group of people and I am going to play music, I will make sure I am playing a playlist that fits the energy of everyone, but also caters to everyone's favorite music. This will impact my literacy teaching practices in a similar way. I will choose texts that fit the curriculum, but also cater to the needs of all of my students.
