         <description><![CDATA[<div>The Ontario Ministry created a policy for English Language Learners in 2007. <br>English Literacy Development (ELD) is a program for English language learners who have had limited opportunities to develop language and literacy skills in their first language.” ELD programs are for students in Grades 3 to 12. <br>With the elementary division, students are expected to learn and develop literacy skills through the Ontario curriculum with appropriate adaptations.</div><div>Within the secondary level, students have the option of taking five ELD credit courses before moving into ESL credit courses. Secondary students are entitled to modifications and/or accommodations, as outlined in each subject curriculum document. </div><div><br></div>]]></description>

         <title>How can I help students catch up on foundational skills?</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><br>-These skills need to be taught in the context of literacy activities that are meaningful and interesting to the students.<br>-Teachers need to begin with spoken language before reading and writing skills can take place. <br>--It’s important for students to use their L1 within the school environment. Using their L1 helps to deepen understanding, transfer knowledge and skills, and offer  a sense of cultural stability and continuity.<br>-Pictures push for language development and are great conversation starters, reading comprehension strategies, writing starters</div><div>-Small group instruction is essential for ELD students. Small group instruction can occur in a variety of ways. Small groups can be established within classrooms or withdrawal support groups.  They can be mixed groupings (ELLs and Non ELL students) or ELLs. </div><div>-Small groups instructions are built around Shared and guided reading practices.<br>-Teachers should select reader material built around the student STEPs and should focus on fiction and non-fiction texts.<br>-Monitor Students language proficieny.</div><div><br></div>]]></description>
