The Lincoln/Douglas debates

This event happened throughout August 21 - October 15, 1858.

Lincoln and Douglas were from opposite parties, and debated over the slavery extension issue in 1858. With new states joining the union every time, they didn't know what to do with them. So both of them would have 7 debates throughout Illinois.

Douglas would win the debate but, Lincoln would get a lot of recolonization from it leading to presidency.

Missouri Compromise

In 1820 a bill was passed called the Missouri compromise, and this was made so. There would be a line from east to west along the 35 parallel, and it divided by the north and south. And it was important because this meant that the north would be non-slave, and the south would be slave states. Which caused riots later in the future due to future states.

Missouri compromise 1850

In 1850, consistent with popular sovereignty meaning. The people in the new states in the west could decide what kind of state they would want to be. Either a non-slave state or a free. This would indicate riots from both sides and eventually to a civil war.

Wilmot proviso

In the 1840s, Wilmot proposed an idea so that the new territories in the west. Wouldn't have slavery in them, and his idea semi-failed. The Senate forced the line between the North and Southo. This made it so it would be half and half power because a majority of the southern states didn't want to go to a non-slave state.

Uncle Tom's cabin

In 1852 uncle Tom's cabin was published, this was a book about a slaves life. And what happens. and all the negatives about it. This brought a lot of people in the North to dislike slavery, and made people realized what really goes on.

Kansas-Nebraska Act & Bleeding Kansas

On May 30, 1854. This created 2 new territories, and allowed for popular sovereignty to happen. And this caused the bleeding Kansas to happen which was when both sides would have little fights, over what the state should be. A slave, or non-slave.

John Brown's raid

On Oct 16, 1859. John Brown made an effort to raid Harpers raid, in order to revolt the southern states. It was named a tragic play that resulted into the civil war. This raid lasted for 2 days and had 21 people in his raid.

The Dred Scott Decision

In the years 1846-1857. Dred Scott was an activist, and he was upset that when it came to the constitution, the black Africans weren't able to have the rights that it had. Such as freedom of speech, freedom of religion, etc. And declared the Missouri compromise to be unconstitutional

The presidential election 1860

In 1860, there was a presidential election. Abraham Lincoln won the presidential election, and this led to the southern states leaving the Union. The reason is, they wanted to keep slavery because it helped them with agriculture work. This is when the civil war started, and Abraham won at the end. With abolishing slavery for good, and the African-american gaining freedom.
