Svetlana gives a voice to the people who survive this, giving them the opportunity to tell the stories that were silenced by the government.

The story is based on the testimonies of many people who were or are involved in various ways with the tragedy. Each interview is written as a monologue; in the book, we read the anecdotes of peasants, children, politicians, scientists, military personnel, and housewives, and each of their stories has relevance.

It is quite melancholic; it is a book about physical and mental pain, but it is also a story about uncertainty, the identity of a nation, memory and how it influences our present and future behaviors, the consequences of our actions, politics, and economics, but, above all, it is a story about people and their feelings, a book incapable of encompassing a whole in which Svetlana puts all her effort.

In my opinion, it is a really moving book, full of bitter, painful, and almost impossible to believe memories of those who lived closely through the disaster.
