Queen Liliuokalani was the queen who was a "strong-willed nationalist who greatly resented domination by foreign interests operating in Hawaii" (Hawaiian). She was the ruler that came after her brother, King Kalakaua, who passed away. She was put under house arrest after Hawaii was annexed because she tried to restore power back to the throne. She was not happy for what happened to her country "fought against it" (McCallum).

" Hawaiian League was a secret political organization formed in Honolulu in 1887" (Hawaiian). "League members staged a mass meeting at the armory on Beretania Street in Honolulu" (Hawaiian) were they demanded royal cabinet and royal promise stay out of politics. They wanted the king at the time to enact the Bayonet Constitution which limited his power. The king than passed away and his sister, Queen Liliuokalani, went into power and tried to give the power back to the throne. They were happy with the outcome of the annexed Hawaii because they got what they wanted.

To say that the native people were not happy about being annexed is an understatement. The natives "engaged in a futile five-year resistance against annexation" (McCallum). The lives they had known was just uprooted and changed because "a considerable population of American sugar cane planters, whalers, and missionaries" (McCallum) came in and changed their lives. The economy was not run by "elite white American colonists" (McCallum). Saying they were a little upset was is gross understatement. Think of being in that situation.

Hawaii having their own government again?

In 2016 the Interior Department agreed upon "re-establishing a government for the indigenous community for the first time in 120 years" (Smithsonian). By doing this it allows them to have a "government-to-government relationship" (Smithsonian) with the United States. By allowing this to happen the native people are allowed to have more freedom than their ancestors had before. This was good news for the native people even though it happened many years later, but they were able to have freedom. They are not having their own government, but they are being able to have more control on things that impact their government without the United States having such a great control over it.

In summary the people of Hawaii were not happy about what happened to their country and still have issues with it to this day. Some people try to still fight against it, but they are apart of the Untied States. Queen Liliuokalani is the queen who was in charge when it all happened. She tried to give more power back to the natives, but it was to late. The United States annexed Hawaii because of the Hawaiian League. In the end the natives of Hawaii were not happy with what happened to their country, but the Hawaiian League was happy.
