Our global issue, racism, misuse of power and police brutality, are clearly illustrated by the murder of Kentucky EMT, Breonna Taylor, and the protests organized around her death by the BLM movement in hopes of receiving justice for Taylor and her family. Taylor was sleeping in her apartment, when police entered her home, thinking two men possessed illegal drugs, and were using her home as a gateway for drug trade. Her boyfriend, who was a certified gun owner, shot one police in defense to the break in, and in rage the police began firing around 20 rounds of ammunition, 5 of those bullets hitting Breonna, and sadly killing her. The text types listed and compared have subtle differences, which reveal facts, and opinions on the fatal incident, and the discrepancies which lead to her death.

Callimachi, Rukmini, et al. “Fired Officer Is Indicted in Breonna Taylor Case; Protesters Wanted Stronger Charges.” The New York Times, The New York Times, 24 Sept. 2020, www.nytimes.com/2020/09/23/us/breonna-taylor-officer-indicted.html?name=styln-george-floyd.

https://nyti.ms/301jmdU

The author of the news article “Fired Officer Is Indicted in Breonna Taylor Case: Protesters Wanted Stronger Case” states that the grand jury's decision shows the inequality, acceptance of police brutality, and lack of justice in our country. The article says that the charges Mr. Hankison, a former detective, was inadequate for the case at hand. Hankison was charged with three cases of “wanton endangerment” because he fired into Ms. Taylor’s apartment without a line of sight and endangered her neighbors lives. The grand jury is showing they have no intention of holding accountable the three cops who murdered Breonna Taylor. The officers claim that they identified themselves as cops and received a gun shot in response fired by Taylor’s boyfriend. However Taylor’s boyfriend claims they believed the cops to be intruders due to hearing no response when Taylor called out, “Who is it?”. The conflicting stories add more confusion to the case, ultimately leaving it up to the jury to decide based off their own perspectives. The author emphasizes the idea that due to the systemic racism and normality of police brutality in our country, the cops who murdered Breonna Taylor have not been charged with her murder.

The author further supports this perspective by criticizing police procedures by stating how misconceptions aside, the police operation that night was tragically flawed” (Glover, Scott), once more making his personal views evident through the article.

Wadell says that, “...people that dont stand up for us love to treat us like items, love to put us in cases on the wall.”. By comparing African Americans to “items'' and being put in “cases on the wall” it gives the idea people with privilege consider people of color as less than human and more of a trophy or award when they succeed. He conveys the idea that by supporting a single person who is doing well but not supporting their struggling community you are contributing to the problem of inequality. Wadell continues to call out Daniel Cameron by saying, “...don’t you be on the wrong side of history. Don't you stay on the wrong side of history.”. He uses the phrase “wrong side of history” to put in perspective the significance of Breonna Taylor's death and how huge of a role it plays in the development of history. He calls upon Daniel Cameron to support Breonna Taylor and support the Black Lives Matter movement. He draws attention to the racial discrimination people of color face in the justice system.

Claim: In the article by the New York Times the authors Richard Oppel, Derrick Taylor and Nicholas Bogel-Burroughs claim that the global issue of racism and police brutality was the cause of Breonna Taylor's death when the officers searching her home failed to comply with department policy.
Analysis:

New York Times article written by Richard Oppel, Derrick Taylor and Nicholas Bogel-Burroughs. These authors focused on the actions carried out by the three officers invading Breonna Taylors home. The authors depict that the violations of department policy was responsible for the killing of Breonna Taylor as was explained in the article in response to the title “what we know about the cause of Breonna Taylor's death”. The authors brought to light the violations made by the officers which included, not having a line of sight when shooting, conducting the raid at night and failing to announce and identify themselves as the police. Throughout all this evidence of wrongdoing by the police the authors chose to stay neutral and depict both perspectives from the officers and of the Taylor’s family. They did this by using an email sent by one of the officers to the department stating they did nothing wrong and carried out the search in a legal fashion. The authors also showed the perspectives of the Taylor’s family who felt the police acted in a sense of carelessness in terms of respecting human life and safety. Alough the authors remain unbiased in this piece they do make it clear that the murder of Breonna Taylor could have been easily avoided by the officers announcing themselves and conducting the search with intentions of safety.

https://www.nytimes.com/article/breonna-taylor-police.html

MLA citation: Oppel, Richard A., and Derrick Bryson Taylor. “Here's What You Need to Know About Breonna Taylor's Death.” The New York Times, The New York Times, 30 May 2020, www.nytimes.com/article/breonna-taylor-police.html.

Mural

Claim: In the mural by Jaylen Stewart, she suggests Breonna Taylor was a victim of police brutality which was a product of the global issue of racism and that the public should recognize her and fight for justice.
Analysis: For my second source I used a mural created by Jalen Stewart that recognized police brutality which is apart of the Global issue of racism. She did this by projecting a mural of Breonna Taylor onto Metro Hall of Louisville. The artist draws an innocent picture of Breonna Taylor and projects it on one of the most important legal buildings to represent that there is an injustice in our police force that is racially motivated. The authors bias stems from the black lives matter movement which condemns a police officers for their actions and supports the innocence of Brianna Taylor. This bias is caused by not only the artist being black as well but being a part of the black lives matter movement. The author makes it clear that we need to fight for justice and can do so by recognizing the wrongdoing done to Breonna Taylor.

https://www.whas11.com/article/life/heartwarming/louisville-breonna-taylor-metro-hall-mural/417-23a87380-9ae7-49ad-94e4-71ab3ad2fa2f

MLA citation:
Cohen, Author: Jessie. “Breonna Taylor's Face Projected on Louisville Metro Hall.” whas11.Com, 6 June 2020, www.whas11.com/article/life/heartwarming/louisville-breonna-taylor-metro-hall-mural/417-23a87380-9ae7-49ad-94e4-71ab3ad2fa2f.
