But surprisingly, the Greeks defeated the Persian force in the doing so the captured seven ships. The Greeks explained the victory as an outcome of their strong nationalism. Even though Persia had lost the salamis battle they still had a large enough army to fight back against the Greek city states. The odds where yet still in favour of the Persian modern historians estimating that it was 80,000 Greeks versus 70,000 to 120,000 Persians.
