There are different representations of the characters shown on the front cover of these movie magazines. First of all every person that is shot on the front cover, is dressed as their character so an audience knows what to expect from the film, the magazine is showcasing the film not the celebrity. There is the representation of gender which is shown on all of these movie magazines, a part from one magazine there is no women shown on the front cover of the movie magazines, this stresses that it is normally men who dominate as the lead role in psychological thrillers. The woman that is shown on one of the front covers is for a film that is based around that girl, and there is still a male shown beside of her, which kind of strings on the stereotype of a woman needing a man to cope.

Imagery

Imagery has been used in the movie magazines in order for them to appear appealing to an audience. The text which is displayed on the front covers of these movie magazines are all done in a similar way. The mastheads of all of the movie magazines are at the top of the front cover in a thick font to stand out. Each film magazine has there own individual design for the movie magazines but eight out of the ten of the magazines have the masthead behind the main image, this shows that the name of the magazine is known as less important and an audience can already recognise which movie magazine they are looking at by the conventions that are held through the magazine at each release and through the house style which each movie magazine uses. The main image which is on the front covers of movie magazines, are all of the main characters of famous psychological thriller films. There is a range of different shots between the movie magazines, some front covers have long shots of the main character, so that we can see their costumes and what they look like as a character in the film. Some of the main images are mid close ups so we can see the emotion on the characters face, for example the character from the shining is poking his head through the door on empire magazine, and he looks in rage; this could link to the genre of the film. There is also an extreme close up on one of the movie magazines, this is used on Empire magazine to show the face of Hannibal, this image shows half of his face and there is a lot of concentration on the blood shot eye which an audience can see; this also links to psychological thrillers, as there is the use of blood and it makes an audience feel slightly scared and weary about this character. Imagery is also used in the layout of the magazine, in most magazines which are shown, there are few intertitles, this helps the focus to be more on the main image.

Narrative

The narrative of the films are displayed through the movie magazines in a number of ways, one is that all of the characters are in costume and an audience can look at the magazines and automatically connect the character to the film that is being advertised. In some of the magazines there is actual props or scenes from the film which also helps an audience to relate what they see on the front covers to the film. For example, in the movie magazine which showcases the film Donnie Darko, which shows the protagonist holding a prop in his hand, this is part of one of the scenes in the film. This is also done in the movie magazine for The Shinning, where the protagonist is popping his head through the door, this relates to the narrative of the film. It is important for a movie magazine to showcase the narrative of a film as an audience gets a better idea of the film.

Media Theory

The different media theorists help to portray the genre of the films on these movie magazines, for example Levi-Strauss, Propp, Barthes, Neale and Altman. Levi-Strauss' theory is shown through the movie magazines in the use of binary opposites. Binary opposites have been expressed through the magazines with the use of the main image and colouring - for example in the film magazine Entertainment, the film Gone Girl uses binary opposites with the characters, as the women is dressed in a white costume and the man in a black costume - this therefore reflecting a number of binary opposites such as good vs evil, male vs female, happy vs sad and also possibly weak vs powerful as the colour black has connotations of power whereas the colour white could connote to weak and innocence. Propp's theory is expressed through the use of character types, on the front cover of the magazines, character types are expressed through the main images and the use of mise-en-scene. For example, the villain is expressed on many of Empire magazines, such as the villain shown on the magazine showcasing "Taxi Driver" and "The Shining". Barthes codes theory are also expressed on the front cover of the magazines, for example the code of action, as the film magazine empire, which shows the film "Donnie Darko", the man is holding a weapon therefore we can connect this with an action code, as we know that this man will use this weapon in some way to harm someone. This magazine also gives the code of enigma in Barthes theory, as we are wondering who exactly the man will hurt with this weapon and why he has got the weapon. So a number of questions are attached to the image shown to an audience on the front cover of the magazine, this can also be a reason for an audience to pick up the magazine and want to read more therefore purchasing the media product. Another theorist which links with these film magazines is the theorist Neale and his theory of "Difference in repetition". Neale has said this because he believes that audiences will watch a film if there is a slight repetition with the outline of the films. Therefore this is expressed through the repetition in the layout of the film magazines; for example all of the magazines use dark colouring to signify the sinister genre, all the magazines have bold anchorage text alerting an audience and also most of the movie magazines have the villain of the film pictured on the front cover of the magazines as they are centred as one of the most important characters of a psychological thriller film. The last theorist which has been used in the development of these movie magazines, is Rick Altman's theory of semantic and syntactic elements. There are various semantic elements which are used on the front cover of these magazines. For example, the props of weapons, the use of dark lighting, the dull dark costumes, these are all semantic elements of the genre psychological thriller. The syntactic elements are harder to see from just looking at the front cover of the magazines, but we can tell that there are villains with mentally ill cruel minds from the way that they are pictured and this is a repetitive narrative that is in psychological thrillers. There is also themes such as existence, fear and revenge which are shown through the main images of the magazines as well.

Communication of the genre psychological thriller

The genre of psychological thriller is expressed through the movie magazines, through the mastheads on the front cover. Most of the mastheads are in a bloodshot red which could connote to the colour of blood which is used a lot in psychological thrillers; especially to showcase the thriller part of the film. The genre psychological thriller is also communicated on the movie magazines through the images, the images are very dark, in some there is the use of shadows which is a convention of psychological thriller films. Dark colours and mysterious deep colours help to convey the genre of the film as well. The genre is communicated through the banners of the movie magazines as well. For example, above the masthead on Total Film magazine there is a banner that is in the colour red, the text is slightly faded making the title look as if blood has been smudged to spell out the words. By using this technique it makes the writing more interesting and it also look more appealing to an audience who enjoys watching films with the genre psychological thriller.

Media Language

The use of media language on a magazine is important, as it helps to communicate to an audience the different aspects of a film in a variety of ways. For example in many of Empire's magazines, which are showcased in the middle of the padlet, the anchorage text is a red square used as a bullet point and then the title of the film in a light browny-yellow colour with a black outlining. The use of a red square bullet point to begin the anchorage text could highlight the importance to an audience as red connotes with importance and an audience will rush to see this colour as it is also a sign of warning. There are few coverlines on most of the movie magazines, and when they are written on the front cover of the magazine, they are not centred as the most important. As more focus is fixated on the main image, masthead and the anchorage being as they are the three most important media languages which are to place an interest to an audiences eye. The main image use media language such as mise-en-scene, to grab an audiences eye with the creative costumes, detailed hair and makeup to make the characters look evil or even deadly, such as the blood shot dirty looking male which is pictured on the front cover of Empire, anchorage text of "What's cooking?". The use of lighting is also a media language which is portrayed to an audience, as the colours are very dark and dull, which signifies death, unhappiness and also misery. The low key lighting effects helps to also represent the genre.
