  • Problems in the middle East began and terrorist Muslim groups held some Americans hostages. Hope to gain favor with Iran and then use its influence to win release of the hostages—the Reagan adminstration sold weapons to Iran.
  • Money from the sale was then used to aid the Contras fighting in Nicaragua. Revelation of the deal caused a scandal.
  • The Middle East was also the scene for a major
    war in 1991. Iraq had seized oil-rich Kuwait in 1990. President Bush led a United Nations effort to
    fight Iraq and liberate Kuwait. It was called
    Operation Desert Storm.
