Willem: Not similar, masskillings were for different reasons, pg. 94: campaign directed toward money, Leopold did it for the sake of wealth. Hitler did it to kill other races.
Matthew: Just because it's mass killing doesn't mean to associate it with the Holocaust. All have specific reasons. Played out differently. Take note to compare.
Pritika: Pg. 18- Leopold was again focused on money, motivated by ethnic cleansing. Motivations quite different.
Mikayla: Psychologically similar, no moral values in killing, personal gain. Autocrats, all selfish reasons.
Matthew: What would have happened if Leopold had come after Hitler? Ignored?
Pritika: How come the United States reflects on more important things than in Rwanda? People in the U.S., the people show concern, the U.S. government feels as if they have to do something.

Willem: Hypocritical, European civilizations doing the same thing one hundred years before, stop slavery in Africa, "civilize" Africa, supporting slavery.
Mahika: criticizing them for not wearing clothes. People in Congo living fine before Europeans. 188, torn apart by colonists and missionaries.
Matthew: twist ideas and concepts to get their own end. Various excuses. Christianity argues that this is wrong but people continue to justify it for progress. Ignoring it even further.

International companies, depend on the source of income, won't have access to food and shelter.
Murphy: Money, multinational companies outsource people to make it cheaper. 94-- one goal: money.
Matthew: no difference, end result is always money. Is there still slavery today? Still present.
Mahika: Bangladesh--clothing industries, unsafe conditions. Still happening. Hidden.
???: Ultimate drive is for profit, how can you make the most money? Change in political stance-- China switching to free market for profit. Leopold is for humanitarianism to expand wealth. Command to free market.

Revolutionary-- spit out bullets.
Willem: In the Congo still using George Washington army weapons from the 1700's, weapons that eclipsed them.
Mikayla: advances successful allowed them to take out the people.
Pritika: improvements in transportation-- steamboats, transport more rubber, meet destinations faster, quotas increased, more labor.
???: medical advances, malaria-- prevent and cure, greater control of the African people. Dying off less. Send in 1000 men, less die. Africans were still dying in massive numbers, less human resources.
Mahika: a small number of white men in the Congo compared to Africans, using technological advances take control of the area, scare the people. Guns were new. Small number.
Pritika: Pg. 306, sick child to entitled medical care, Rwanda, work harder. Benefit for their own benefit.

Materialistic, recent humanitarian.
Mahika: Britain only when it benefited them, crimes against humanity, didn't matter.
Matthew: Humanitarianism is another excuse. Control, power, and money. Do they care about the emotions? What do they get from this? Entire point of politics. How to get goal? Sacrifice as little as possible. King Leopold wanted entire control, manipulated every person to get what he wanted.
???: hypocrisy in western humanitarianism, outrage over something-- without an armed force, cannot make a man leave his home...forced labor brought an outcry, less than 60 years earlier Indian Removal Act, no global outcry. Needed the labor.
???: colonial government hinders the formation of a nation later, complete control of the government, Congo was an international area to gain resources for rubber, U.S. assassination of leader. Leopold gone but drive remains, western international pull, lack of education.
Mikayla: forced plantation labor continued, conditions improved, but not noticeable.
Matthew: pg. 277, did it do any lasting good?

Pritika: Point fingers, powerful countries don't do anything about own issues, point fingers, unethical. Shameful to point out others flaws.
Matthew: in the introduction, connects to key concept 6.2, redistribution of land, form of imperial expansion
???: history is viewed, aha moment-- the Great Forgetting, burning on the steps of the capital, museum where there is no evidence, history is written by the victors, horrors of some wars are not mentioned/written, millions killed, enslaved, try to hard are own, write our own history, ignore.
Mahika: same passage, importance of remembrance, how much else is out there that we don't remember, to try and prevent from happening again.
Matthew: the entire point of history to learn from the past, to read stuff from this, to not fall into the same traps and tricks. May happen again if we are not careful.
Murphy: page 127, "armies first few years, outnumbered by soldiers by the Congo...hunters rather than the hunted.." join army and turn back on people rather than be by their side.
Pritika: Matthew learn from our history, are we learning from our history, horrible, Holocaust, are we learning this is wrong go on to the next issue.
Mahika: learn from it.
Matthew: we are learning but not applying the solution, ignore it eventually. Applying what we know in our lives.
???: advancing in areas. Kosovo or not Rwanda, culture we associate with, then we are more likely to react. Intervene but do we care?
Willem: 131, actual recording of African slave in a village and then conquered, afraid of the Congo Europeans, food to them, take and then leave, come back, see how brutal they were.
Mahika: Holding daughter, worth less than a cooking pot.
Mikayla: Leopold's power manipulated people get rid of human morals. Forget these are people. Self-centered, manipulate public and involved and didn't notice.
Mahika: pictures, media caused outcry, could see what was happening to the people. Leopold's words couldn't battle the pictures.
Willem: Talk about its another thing to see it and have real evidence. Turning point of making people in Europe believe what is happening in the Congo is bad and needs to be stopped.

Mikayla: Overlooked, made me want to be more like Morel, motivated, to try and let morals overcome and fight for what is right.
Matthew: Teach signs for when this is happening, don't overlook. This going on? Is this right? Esp. when it comes to leaders who gain power.
???: awful power what person can get away with manipulation, PR leaders, control media even when he was killing millions of people. What you can do when you control the people.
Pritika: manipulate, corruption. India-- corruption, uncle- common corruption, low scale, but it's not the right thing to do.
Mahika: George William Washington, Morel, characters want to change. Ability to look past publicity, looked at facts. Motivation to want to change something. Affected me the most. Want to change, motivation to fix what is wrong.
Willem: smaller scale, standing up to great power, school, standing up to people doing something bad at school or out of school as teenagers do. Gives you strength and courage to do it now.
Pritika: King Leopold---superior than people in the Congo, ideology of superiority, better than them, concept of superior, cause into big, want to change thought process.
